as i'm still new to porsche i could do with some advice before i call OPC.

i've had the 996tt for just over a month now and all the talk recently on here about exhausts (i do want a better sound) made me take a quick look under the rear to see what system is currently on the car.

anyway while i was looking i noticed what i think are the two heat shields on the car - at either side of the bumper directly behind the fins on the bumper and look like heat sheild material. i assume these are the famous heat shields people take about failing?

anyway the thing i'm not 100% happy about and where i need advice is that there are bolt heads coming through the above material but no nuts or washers on them so these rattle against whatever is between them and the bumper. i did not have a 100% look but at least 2 or 3 had no nuts etc.

when the car is cooling there is also a lot of cooling down ticking from the rear. is this linked to above or usual or something else?

is the missing nuts usual / ok?

i bought the car from an opc and if this is wrong i'm quite pissed off as these heatshields seem to be expensive and prone to failing.

can someone confirm if this is usual or wrong before i go calling OPC?

thanks
Rick

Just had a quick look under mine and for what it's worth, the heat shields at each side both have bolts with nuts and then there is a further nut/bolt fixing it at the front to the lower lip of the bumper. The heatshield along the rear has three nuts in place with washers....

Mine 'ticks' considerably when it's cooling and I wouldn't have thought this was particularly related. It ticks even more when I've been pressing on a bit, although obviously I don't do this very often as it's a Tiptronic and I'm reliably informed via these pages that they're 'crap'. Occassionally I race a snail off the drive and that makes it tick as it cools...

I wouldn't have thought manuals would tick; I'm sure this will be proven to be an affliction of the Tip.

No, the manuals tick as well...probably a bit more actually because they go faster.

mine def. does not have any nuts. you can see the thread of the bolts coming through but no nuts.

should i bother OPC or just do it myself? i assume it's a piss easy job to do or due to the fact that i've only had the car 1 month should i be a pest and call OPC?

all 911's tick, it's part of their beauty!

thin grade metals, heat shields, high temperatures, engine near the exhaust system etc etc - all make the 911 tick unique.....oh I'm romanticising again!

If I were you, I would have a good check of all the heat shields and the fixings and get the OPC to fix it pronto. I had big problems with my heat sheilds on my 996TT. I was told they had rusted through only 3 months into ownership - the car was 3 years old and covered 20k at the time. The OPC I bought it from said that the exhaust wasn't covered under warranty. I said that in that case the 111 point check was incorrectly carried out and that I should report this problem to Porsche central. Moreover, I wanted them fixed or else. They obliged - but I had to demand to see the principal.

Now I know you are just missing your nuts, but if you muck about with them and they find out (the OPC that is), your warranty for that part becomes void. And besides, why pay for a warranty if you don't use it?
