Hi there,
Just looking for a bit of advice - I have a '99 C2 with CR22 stereo which I am planning to upgrade to sat nav unit - is it possible and worthwhile to fit an original PCM system?
Is the system any good?
Would it be a nightmare to fit?
I know the ac would need to be relocated.
Thanks,
Richard

there seems to be a huge amount of information on PCM and projects such as this on the renntech.org forum - im using that to get information on updating my navigation discs on a 51 reg 996. Im sure ive seen people post "how-to's" on upgrading and installing sat nav. Id check there chap.

Honestly, why bother? It's old and outdated. People were moaning about it in it's heyday.
Go and buy yourself one of these:

Tom Tom 6, built in GPS, Web, Email, Phone, Contacts, 3G, Tri-Band - you name it, it does it. All for £500-ish including TT6. You can take it with you anywhere in the world. Heck, I'm taking mine to NZ in a couple of months and have NZ maps on it too (non TT).

i agree the Tom Tom is on balance *better*, but (i cant use mine anyway as the girlfriend seems to have stolen it, and I cant negotiate for its release as frankly she does the washing up - so is holding all the cards as well as said TomTom)i dont specifically have any complaints with the PCM either other than its fiddly to input destinations.
I would say there is still merit in retrofitting this, as 1) it is useable and in keeping with the car without having to have things stuck on the windscreen etc and 2) whilst PCM will not increase the resale value of a car per se, it will increase the cars *saleability* - i would argue that if Richards car has sat nav and another 996 doesnt and the potential buyer is happyish with either, he/she would take the one WITH sat nav.
Just my twopennyworth.

The cost of getting the PCM will be horrendous and the 996 system is veeeery slow. I'd go for a Becker radio/CD unit with Satnav if you don't like the TomTom's. No big screen with detailed maps but extremely effective and marginal installation cost
I would second that. the becker units look standard to the car and i understand the nav system works well oh and they have full poddy functionality
Its high on my wish list - just a few more years in kings cross to raise the money before I loose my boyish good looks
Guys think about this for a moment. Right now, Sat Nav is all the craze and because of this it is progressing soooo fast it's unbelievable.
On my version of TT6 (for Windows mobile 2005) I have traffic updates, automatic re-routing, weather information, speed cameras across Europe, all sorts of Points of Interest etc etc. It cost me about £100 for the software.
IMO in 2-3 years time these early Sat Nav systems won't be worth a toss. Therefore cars with built in systems won't be worth any more than ones without.
It's like having a PC XT at home, nice thing to look at from a historical perspective but something you'd never use. Just my 2p.

Hi there
I have a 98 with the PCM Sat Nav and have to say I wouldnt miss it if it were gone, the weight loss might even improve performance! I would say go with an Alpine / Becker whatever if you want a fixed one or a Tom Tom phone which really is good but can get tedious with cables and recharging bluetooth aerials etc. My choice would be a new sat nav head unit type affair.

I use tomtom nav on my XDA phone, which incidentally was a free upgrade.
download the speedcamera overlay and your sorted.
its also great for hoons when you dont know the roads, just hve a quick glance at the screen and you get an ide how sharp the bends ahead are
just DONT use the french speed camera overlay, im sure thats what buggered mine on the way to lemans.
edited to add ive used mine for 2.5 years with no probs other than lemans this year. . . . and when i turned of the french speed camera overlay it worked again 100% no problems.

Mate, it's brilliant. Been running my Loox for 3 weeks now with TT6, it's incredible. OK being bigger than a phone it's "slightly" clunky but in one unit you get every bloody thing. No need for any suction mounts, just buy a custom fit mount from brodit and you're good to go. I have one for the 996. This device really is the dogs bollox.
