Porkers on the list here:

Parking permit plan targets 'gas guzzlers'. Band A would consist of electric cars while band G would be made up cars such as 4x4s, the Porsche 911 Carrera, the Jaguar X-type, Range Rover 4.4 litre and the Renault Espace people carrier.

I'd never have thought the 911 would be in the same category as a Renault Espace!

Also here (though no porkers listed)

Those of you with two cars (in London) might want to read the above - Ken's keen to see this extended. Makes you want to move to.....

F**k this! Porsche's beyond the Cayenne are well known for their fuel economy. If they were really serious about this, then they would need to ban every non-diesel Beemer, Merc and Audi as well...

Agreed. The mpg posted by wetwipes and magictorch (IIRC) on their Napoleon route seemed impressive.

At this rate the Gendarmerie's fines for GB plated porkers will be good value for hooning in France compared with having a porker as a second car in London!

I'm glad my 1970 Z28/RS Camaro is tax exempt and does at least 8mpg on a good day. F**kem. The biggest culprit by far is the US. Bush says that he is all for saving the planet as long as it does not cost US industry any money. So I'll take that as a NO then.

I reset mine today before my travels, spent 8 hours on the road 2.5 hours of that stuck in traffic and the computer is saying I averaged 33.4 mpg.

my mate has a civic type R and gets about 25mpg on a average run. . . . . . . .

although to be fair it is meant to be emissions (C02) based, rather than based on fuel economy.

Still a load of B*ll*cks, though, when you consider the amount of C02 expelled by cars compared to other sources such as lorries, buses, aircraft, industry, animals! etc !

If your 2nd car is used mainly at weekends, why should you be charged so much (50% more, and up to 750 quid per two-car household) when your weekend car use perhaps leads to less environmental damage than a medium sized diesel car used daily during the week?

In any case, there's already a national sliding scale tax for emissions!

Of course if you're parked off the street and need no permit, then no worries (for now), but there are loads of porkers parked in the streets of London.

Any residents of Richmond care to comment? Or are we Brits going to just put up and shut up as usual.....?

Good point!

So why haven't Richmond Council and Ken got together to convert Ken's idea of an aviation congestion(?) charge for London?

Just another middle class tax dressed in eco lie clothes. Surly all cars are equally pollutant when parked?

no one else finds it mildly amusing that the extremely comfortable residents of richmond vote for the liberal beards and backdoor action party then get screwed by some halfwitted weasely psuedo eco tax?

Morning all....

I've lived in Richmond for 15 years and have had to suffer these clowns for 11 of those years. Somehow the Tories got booted out at the May elections after doing a pretty decent job for the previous 4 years. I'm afraid that this Borough has always been afflicted by stinking rich pseudo-lefties who can't bear to be seen to vote Tory....but could not dare to be seen as a downtrodden Socialist.

During the LibDems time in power during my time in Richmond they have....

Given us the largest Council tax bill in the UK
Sold the Richmond Ice Rink site for a pittance and then proceeded to lose most of that money in suspicious deals.
Wasted millions on useless cycle lanes which have since been dug-up.
Managed to have ZERO reserves in the Bank !

During the last election campaign they made a big issue of the (sensible) reserve that the Tories built up during their tenure. The suggested that they thought this was wrong and would repay it to residents. They lied. In fact it was never going to happen because it's not legal to do so. They instead decided to spend some of that money on awarding themselves 35% increases in their allowances the first week they got the keys to the Town Hall.

I do not recall anything about the revised CO2 based parking charges mentioned in their manifesto. That might have been a vote-killer. I see that they are going to 'consult' 3500 households in the Borough. Sounds like a Ken Livingstone style consultation to me.

Luckily I have a 911rs that lives in a garage. My gas-guzzling 318i Touring (1997 vintage) will be hit by a 30% increase in permit charges. I suppose the flip-side of this is that my house just increased in value by 10% overnight due to the garage !

Interesting that Aviation is rarely mentioned in this debate. LHR is growing by the year and the 3rd runway is on the cards to go with Terminal 5. That's a bit more CO2 dumped into my garden. To compensate I'd better burn the Beemer since I am obviously the problem.

Time for another letter to my useless Local Councillor. I'm not holding my breath for a reply. This has to be stopped. If it's successful here, expect a national rollout of the scheme.

scratchchin Now let me see . . .

We live just inside the boundary of the new extension to the congestion charge zone. Between me and Mrs Londoner we have 3 cars, one of which is a, shock horror, 4x4.

All 3 paid for privately out of taxed income. Two bought new so paid VAT on them. All fully taxed and insured. All kept properly serviced, so VAT paid on garage bills. Each filled up at least once a month if not twice, so lots of tax paid there. All 3 depreciating at a variety of knots. Pay to park them on the street with no guarantee of actually being able to find a space, currently £110 pa for each permit. Shortly we are going to have to start paying for the privilege of driving in our own neighbourhood. Apparently now we might end up paying even more to park the cars as well.

There is no time now that one way and another having a car is not costing money

"Fcuk it" does not even begin to sum this situation up! furious

Paul,

I also live in Richmond, you can stick my name to your letter if you wish. I also though about the increase in house prices due to this great move by the council but as i only have a drive maybe ill only see a 5% rise?!?!?!?! ha ha Maybe they will increase stamp duty for any property with a garage or a drive, they wont want to miss out on a slice of the pie

Assuming an efficient burn, isn't emissions going to be pretty directly coupled to fuel economy?

Exactly - and to be really pedantic, if you wanted it to be truly on nasty emissions rather than simply a revenue raiser, the tax band would be based on %NOx and %CO as well as the amount of CO2 (harmless to it's local environment)
