Might seem like a silly comparison, but that’s my position at the moment.

After owning a 964 Targa for 4 years I’m now after another 911 and I want something a bit sportier. I’ve decided that it must be a coupe, RHD, RWD and naturally aspirated. I have done a few track days and will do some more, but mainly it will be a car for weekend blasts.

I currently have a budget of up to £25,000 but could stretch to more early next year (hence the thoughts of GT3), but for now I’m looking at buying either buying a fairly tired 964 (eg for £13k) and spending money on engine rebuild and suspension upgrade, plus MOTEC and brakes if funds allow. I will then have the car that I want. I’m not after an RS as they are expensive in RHD and too raw for my tastes.

I’ll probably keep the car for 5 years or so. On balance I guess that both cars will cost similar to keep on the road and that both will depreciate (the 964 due to the cost of mods and the GT3 through age and mileage).

On a slightly different topic, I’ve seen a nice Scirocco that could keep me going until next year (if I get a GT3)!!!

So peeps, am I mad to consider the 964 when I could get a GT3 which has much more power, working air-con, track ready out-of-the-box???

Surely a decent 996 GT3 is going to be nearer £40k?

If you can stretch to it, brilliant. I think the GT3 is a real gem and, at current prices, a real bargain.

Leo,

excuse the hijack - did you run the targa as a daily driver or just for weekend fun? And how livable would you consider it?
Cheers

Just my opinion, don't waste time effort and money modding a 964, you won't get back much of what you "invest" in uprating it.
If you can stretch to a GT3 early next year you'd be mad not to. Having owned a few 964 RSs and a 964 C2 I can confidently say if you try a GT3 you won't look back.
The GT3 is quite simply leagues ahead in just about every aspect.
Choose the right car and depreciation over the period you mention shouldn't be a massive issue.
Go get a testdrive now !!!

Hope this helps !

A standard 964 is fantastic compared to a 'normal' car, a bit of a toy compared to a GT3. This is just personal experience and MHO - not flame bait [please take note defensive 964 owners - it is not my intent to dis' your P&J. Allow me my bias and feel free to ignore rolleyes]. Owning one makes your world just a bit better place - if it is within your reach it is well worth the wait.

Test drive one now (as this is when you must decide - an OPC should be accomodating if you explain things to them) to know whether it is the right car for you. The steering feel is as close to an air cooled car as Porsche have made since the switch to water cooling. The ride is a bit better over everything except speed bumps (though closer to the 964 than to somthing like a 997S). The performance is an entirely different kind of fast and it has brakes to match. But I daresay that you have already read all of this elsewhere...

Very livable with light controls and pedals, torquey engine a 28mpg on a run.

The targas can be susceptible to wind noise, creaks and water leaks though. Body stiffness might be an issue for some.
