Im considering part-exing my much love 2001 boxster S for a 996 (2000) C4 tip CAB, the problem Im having is that the CAB is CAT D!
its being sold at 23995, which is well under the price of an unrecorded CAB and appears to have been repaired to a high standard. There has been an indepenant inspection report undertaken on the vechicle by the seller to say that it has been correctly repaired to the highest standard. Any thoughts, potential pit falls and/or advice would be much appreciated.

Insurance is a bee-atch on ex-write offs, or so I'm told.

personally i wouldnt touch it...

for 24k you can get a decent early 996 with FSH and clean record... a much better investment than something thats going to be hard to sell on!

You'll be sorry....

Drive a 996 cab on the sort of roads that make the Boxster a joy before you make the decision. If you like the feel of roof down motoring the Boxster is the more accomplished car.

However if you do like the 996 cab why not spend a little more and swap your Boxster for my 996 cab

I am sure Rob will be along soon to wax lyrical about the joys of a C4 cab.

As for it being cat D - you pay your money and take your chance. If you have throughly investigated its history and are satisifed it is straight (in more ways than one) then there are no worries there.

the general trade view is that cat D's are lepers and will bid as much as 40% lower than book trade price if you ever came to sell it on, so the original purchase price needs to be keen.

As for insurance, the willingness to underwrite such a vehicle varies from insurer to insurer. most insurers use an online quotation system which is supported by experian and will flag the cat d. give it a go and ring a round for a few quotes - you may be surprised.

I went down this route and I'll throw a couple of questions at you if I may.

What will the 996 do better than the Boxster?

Did you know that you could probably have the same power output as a 996 out of your Boxster in a lighter and better handling car for £6K?

Everyone around here knows I love Boxsters and I personally think they're cracking cars. I just wonder what your reasons are for changing?

Maybe he's an emotional wreck from all the merciless persecution from the "Boxsters are for hairdressers" brigade!

My boxster is 2001 (X) massive spec, 18" carreras, unmarked. Hardtop, clear lenses, becker sat nav..artic park inclding
transmission cover. its had 5owners and covered 48K, just had a massive service at paragon, the dreaded RMS, new clutch and flywheel as well as all the normal, disks...etc..etc Heres a few pics.... (I tried to insert some pics but no joy!!)

my reasons for changing, if Im totally honest is that I absolutely love the 996 but also love open air driving hence my natural
sway towards the Cab, it just has something that the boxster lacks, notably that sexy fat backside!!! maybe I should just give the open air a rest and try the coupe, decisions, decisions!!!

IMO, and it really is just my opinion, the Boxster is the better open topped Porsche, the coupe is the better 911.

I would see if you can get a decent test drive in a 996 cab and explore the front end grip. The car feels very different to the Boxster through the twisties.

the 996 cab is a great looking car but it still drives like a coupe that has had its roof chopped

the boxster was engineered to be open and thus is a rigid as two rigid things superglued together.

I cant really image anything is going to handle as sweetly as the boxster can

A 996 Cab certainly takes a lot of justifying over a 986S, especially if the 996 is a 3.4 and the 986 a 260bhp (although in this case it isn't).

I cant comment on the cab situation - but I tried a 986 S (260bhp) after a couple of 996 3.4's (300bhp) and there was a significant power difference IMO...

Infact, thats why i went for a 996 - I just couldnt not have that power in my life

6K for forty BHP should be easily dooable. Factor in the fact that the Boxster is lighter and.... lick
