Chaps,

I'm looking for a 996 C4S manual, for around about £35-40k. I can't find any. They all seem to be those rediculous flappy paddle nonsense things. Did they do a manual pre-facelift or were they all Tiptronic?

There are a few more manuals around after facelift, but they are bigger money.

If I'm looking for something that doesn't exist, then I suppose I'd better look for a C4.

All hints gratefully received.

Cheers.

I don't think Porsche produced a pre-facelift 996 C4S - believe it was introduced in the 2002 model year

I will duly stand corrected if someone else comes along and steals my thunder

the c4s wasn't available pre facelift. what u may be seeing are 996 tiptronic s models. i believe that is what the tiptronic was called by porsche. they certainly won't have had the turbo body, brakes, suspension etc and that is why u won'tsee any under 40k unless they are imports or stolen recovered etc

"S" models were not made in the 996 other than the C4S with the wide body and, latterly the turbo S

models were

C2, C4, C4S, Turbo, Turbo S, GT2, GT3

Cagey is 'a bit' right. Porsche referred to the pre facelift 996 Tip as the 996 C4 Tiptronic S.

This one was up for £35995...

www.sascron.co.uk/vehicle-details.asp?intModel=&intMax=&intMin=&RSPage=1&ID=111744

There are a few but tend to be higher mileage, poor spec, etc etc

There is (amazingly) a Porsche approved one at Colchester currently - go to www.porsche.com/all/uk/?colchester
& look at their stock list...it's a silver/grey one

C4S is coming in at around £45k for a 'reasonable specced' version (Bose, Sat Nav, etc.) and mileage under 30k. Private deals are around £2k less than main dealers, but then you have the cost of inspection and 'Official' warranty, which is about £1k.

Cheers Chaps. The early car sare all C4 "Tiptronic S" so thanks for clearing up the Porsche product line for me. It's much easier with TVR as they all have different names and no choices to make!

Has anybody had experience of a C4 and a C4S? Personally I prefer the look of the S and I understand that the looks are the only diference. Is that right?

I believe that the C4S has the suspension (lower) and brakes from the Turbo. The C4 does not have these features.

IMO the c4s looks fantastic coz it nearly looks like a turbo...not as nice to drive as a normal carrera 2 as the car feels heavy and clumsy in comparison,2wd cars feel better in general.I had a C4S for 6 months but got bored with its lack of performance(no quicker than an m3)so bought a gt3(too harsh for me on the road)so bought a turbo in the end.At 45k you are in Turbo territory and the turbo's extra power makes up for the heavy feel of the c4s/turbo chassis.IMO of course.

I went for a C4S and I can't imagine needing more power than I have already (but give it a year, I'm not saying 'never' lads)

I like the fact it won't bite my ass if I do something stupid... (he says hoping he doesn't have to eat his words :touchwoodicon: !)

All down to personal choice really... do you like blondes or brunettes... nice ass or long legs

Broadly speaking the 4 and 4S are similar, unless you have an issue with getting in your driveway. Mainly to do with ground clearance, in which case 4s and turbo similar.

4 and 4s broadly similar in running costs and maintenance.
Turbo bit more expensive, but as Kayc says, in performance terms very different.

No although looks alone are enough reason to go for the 4S. AS mentioned above they came with turbo brakes, suspension and turbo-style wheels

also extra toys - leccy seats / speaker upgrade or cheaper Bose / NCO sports seats

Does anyone know the weight difference between the C4 and C4S?

This might it explain the suspension and brake differences. They may be there because the extra body weight demands they are fitted.

eh??!?! they are there because the S spec demands it is higher spec/more sporty - the sports chassis is lowered (not weighted) 20mm like the turbos and the brakes are stronger like the turbos

really don't think a few cms fatter arse, wider tyres and larger brakes add much weight

I have a manual C4S. Good drive. ok as an everyday car. Leaves you wanting more ooomph - to be honest feels slightly slower than my E46 M3.

Re weights (all post facelift cars):

Manual:

C2 1370kg
C4 1430kg
C4S 1495kg
Turbo 1590kg

Auto (sorry I mean tiptronic):

C2 1400kg
C4 1460kg
C4S 1550kg (wonder why this one is 55kg heavier than manual rather than 30kg)
Turbo 1630kg

So somewhere between 65kg and 90kg.

Not a lot of weight eh?

About as much as putting two skinny twenty year old birds in the back, or a really big fat one in the front

hmmm you're right that is a lot, wonder what is to blame supposed leccy seats might add a bit (although I don't think the chassis/brake upgrade has anything to do with the weight)
