993 Insurance Policy
Discussion
I'm in the process of purchasing a 993 (95 model) and need to insure it as a "second car". I know that Direct Line will mirror my no-claims bonus (for which I have Full and protected) and that's probably the route I will go down, but I was wondering if the 993 falls into the classic category with restricted mileage etc and that might be better. Anyone on this forum insure a 993 as a second car and have experience of the various insurance companies?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I'm in the process of buying a 993 at the moment too so have spent a bit of time reading old threads on here about insurance over the past few days.
Seemingly, if it's ten years old or more, it's possible to insure it on a classic car policy with an agreed limited mileage - cheaper than a lot of "normal" policies but it is also not linked to your NCB bonus, so you could retain that for use on your main car.
I just did a search for "993 insurance" and a number of helpful threads with suggestions of who to get quotes from came up.
(Got a couple of "normal" quotes online last night and a '96 993 C2 is coming in at at least £150 cheaper to insure than the S2000 I've just sold!)

Yes I insured my 993C4 ('96) as a second car for 5 years (2001 - 2006).
I went with Norton/Heritage Insurance who insured it under a "modern classic" policy. It was under 10 years old at the time but no no claims were required or were they accumulated over the period.
The premium was mostly based on value of car and age of driver. You had to have use of an everyday car.

The only problem I have found with classic policies is the stipulation that the car be garaged and the restriction on the mileage.
Also, if you plan to track the car it's worth considering a policy that includes this cover rather than paying through the teeth for each individual track day.

I'm based in Berkshire, just had a quote for restricted mileage of 5K a year...came out at 472.50 including breakdown cover. Although they want minimum cat 2 immob and a signed letter head based paper from a "porsche authority"..that needs clarifying...specialist / dealer...not sure as the clown on the phone didn't know either. I'll need to look ino that. Interestingly for 3K a year it's only 10 quid cheaper....so who would really bother with that!!

That's bl**dy cheap.
Same as cyberface I'm with Asset Trust, who don't require a garage, nor if you live in London a second car, and are v good about modifications. However, I'm probably going to change at the renewal next month, but only because I can get a similar priced policy which includes trackdays (none at all with the Asset Trust policy).

My 993 is on a classic policy with Asset Trust - the big bonus being that they didn't demand that the car be garaged. I do not have a garage so that would have been a stopper - as is they also accepted the modifications on my car, so I thoroughly recommend them!
I second cyberface when it comes to Asset Trust - spoke to them when I considered getting a '95 993, and they would have accepted it although it would have been my 1st and only car in the UK and parked in the street. Have insured my 3.2 Carrera with them and am happy
OK, I'd like to thank everyone for their input. My findings are as follows and are based on a classic policy with 5K restricted mileage:-
1. "Asset Trust" came first at 418 pounds. It's another 12.50 to do an agreed value, which is filling in a form with photographs etc. This does not include using the car for commuting purposes...I won't be...it's a second car. On a car of this nature it would be mad NOT to do the agreed value.
2. In second place was RHClassicInsurance at 477 pounds not including commuting and it's down
to you to find an independent that is willing to say that the car is worth that value, by writing it on headed paper...something of that nature. It cannot be the company/organisation you are purchasing from...so I'm told.
3. Norton/Heritage said that they could not get close to the RHClassicInsurance quote and didn't proceed further.
Other facts...I'm 37 years of age, no convictions or claims in the last x years and I'm based on Berkshire.
I will be going with Asset Trust at 418 + 12 pounds for the agreed value.
