Guys,
It's a fair few months off yet, but I bought my 1999 C4 Cab Tip ( cue :hairdressersmiley: ) from a non-porsche dealer ( a fezza dealer )who gave me a 3rd party warranty. It seemed very comprehensive and comparable in price to Porker warranty and I didn't pay for it. But when it runs out I'd quite like to renew with the pukka Porker one. The question is, after those nice/wonderful/superb/ccensoreds ( delete as appropriate ) people at Porsche have relieved me of a couple of hundred sovs for the 111 point check thingymajig, how likely are they to insist on lots of stupid bits being done before issuing the warranty ?? Anybody had one go straight through the checks without anything being done ?? Or is that just wishful thinking ??

Mark.

first up they will tell you the brake disks need doing all round, happend to me and alot of others.

I just told them ill swap them now, today, right here, aslong as they warrant the new disks this is no problem.

basically, anything they tell you to fix just make sure its warranted and your sorted.

I had a aircon problem that I needed to get fixed before they would warrant it, think it ended up costing me 400 quid or somthing then they slapped a warranty on it, just 2 weeks later, it was back in OPC having the aircon sorted, they fixed the wrong part and had to take it apart to resolve the issue, anyways, would have cost me more than 400 quid for all the regassing/labour/parts they replaced so it was their own fault for warranting it in the first place as they had not fixed it 100%.

for the record I had to pay for a worn seal on the aircon, the rest was warranty job.

they i assume will ask you to fix everything that you would want to claim for on the warranty. They wouldnt want to give you a warranty then have to fix everything on the car thats wrong! In my case they pointed out things like weak vanity mirror hinges...

Granted. I wouldn't expect them to give me a warranty with broken stuff on my car, but as far as I can see, my car's fine ( I will need my pads / discs doing, but would get those done maybe a week before getting it checked ). but it's stuff exactly like your mirror hinges and things that I wouldn't normally expect to be warrantied, that I would be concerned about. such as I have a white spot on my black leather seat - are they going to get me to change the seat ?? How small and stupid does it get ??

When I got mine done they pointed out about 3 or 4 things that needed doing and about another 4 or 5 warnings. I got the bits needed doing done by a local specialist and then took out the warranty - I wouldn't own a Porsche without one (£7K gearbox anyone ??). I can't see why they would make you do the disks as they won't be covered anyway surely ?

The discs and pads thing is a ruse - apparently they get commission for the tyres and brakes they manage to sell....!!

You never know when you'll need an ally

Serious point, you'll only be able to get the Porsche warranty for another couple of years. I would consider reading the Porsche contract alongside your existing one to see which offers the most comprehensive cover.

When you're moving from one porsche warranty period to the next, there's no requirement to have the 111 point check because clearly if there's anything wrong it should be covered by the previous warranty anyhow.

Presumably you could argue the same applies here: Buy the 111 point check and send off the job list to your old warranty company for completion before it runs out.

Yeah I know it's only good up to 10 years. I am considering looking at maybe renewing the exisiting Warranty, though I believe it's more wonga than the Porker one ( but then I'm not paying for the 111 point check first, so it's swings and roundabouts ). My baby's been as good as gold so far though :touchwoodenheadsmiley: She's just been serviced without issue, and running like a dream. I guess my only concern with the 3rd Party Warranty is the hassle of getting everything sorted if something were to happen. At least with Porkers own, one would presume it's a relatively painless exercise.

Is it a "Warrantywise" warranty ? I also bought mine from a Fezza dealer. It was the second porker from the same dealer and the previous year they gave me an OPC warranty. This year they allegedly moved to Warrantywise because it gave a greater level of cover ?!! They said it had a greater max. claim per part and covered at least as much as the OPC ?! I will be facing your dilemna next year and would be interested if anyone else has the same warranty etc.

Yup, I believe it is. I'm not sure about the OPC warranty but I'm sure the Warrantywise is "only" up to 5k max claim. Having read throught the booklet though, it does seem very comprehensive.

Mark,

It may be worth getting a print out from an OPC of what the cover provides and then give Warrantywise the chance to confirm (in writing) that their cover is equivalent or highlight any gaps. I seem to remember from the paperwork that I received that the warranty cost about £500, which compared to the 111 check + £750 is about £500 cheaper. It may be cheaper for a reason, but it is hard to know how to get a clear answer.

This is clearly balls.

The OPC warranty has no limit on claims up to the value of the car. So how can the "claim per part covered" be more??!

Glad you asked this question as I bought my C4S from Autobahn in Coventry and I have a non-OPC warranty.

Has anyone got experience of what happens if you get a problem, and go to an OPC with a non OPC warranty? Do they sting you harder?

I live in London and don't want to keep going to Coventry to get it fixed!?!

Not personal experince, as I am a bit of an evangelist for the OPC warranty - BUT I imagine that if you go to OPC then they'll be charging you full whack. The non Porsche warranty co will not pay the full labour rate - they will say OPC to expensive and YOU will have ot make up the shortfall.

One of the advantages of the OPC warranty is that you don't have to pay the bill when the work is done, just pick up your car and drive off. Third party companies often require you to settle the bill then claim it off them which is sometimes like trying to pull a gorilla off your grandma.
