944 automatic rattle noise in drive

I have been experiencing a metallic rattle noise from the transaxle or 'flexi-plate'??? from my 944.
The local garage said its a transaxle rattle and wouldn't touch it... The local gearbox specialist say they suspect the flexi-plate or flexi drive (whatever one of those is) from the engine into the torque tube and referred me back to the local mechanic!
Can anyone shed any light on the subject please?
