Need some advice from all you people who know. Looking to get my first Porsche and want to know what it would be best to start off with and how bad the running costs are?? Looking to spend about 45k so have been thinking about a C4S?? Have driven the new 997 on a track day and loved it but can't stretch to that unfortunately.
Any advice would ge greatly appreciated.

Personal opinion? .. The 996 C4S is the best looking of the n/a 996's .. BUT,

It's probably the heaviest , has a smaller boot , the steering 'may' not be as alive as a c2............................................................ BUT

The C4S residuals seem to be holding up very well ........................ BUT

Find another 5K and you're in 996 Turbo territory .... C4S with teeth!!.

Coming from a 225 Audi TT (don't laugh)

Will use the car for mainly weekend trips as live in London.

Not looking to track as yet

No experience of powerful RWD cars other than a Porsche track day.

The C4S has the sports chassis (M030 pack) as standard. Having once made the mistake of owning a Boxster with MO30 suspension and 18" wheels in London all I'll say is make sure you drive one on the sorts of London Steets around where you live. The Boxster was a bone shaker with no compliance whatsover. However, on smooth roads it handled like nothing I've driven before or since. I had to get rid of it in the end as it just gave me a thumping headache.

Interesting about the Boxster. Have been told to start off with that by a mate who's had loads of Porshe's but have my heart set on a 911.

Cheers for all the posts guys. Much appreciated.

Just from my perspective - i looked at both the C2 and C4 when shopping for mine - i preffered the C2 from a driving perspective, not to mention twice the boot space, but the 4 seemed sure footed enough...

My advice, try a C2, a C4 and C4S and see which you prefer (or that you can get for nearest your requirements/money)

I'd go for the C4S for the looks alone, any 996 will be a step up in feel and performance from the TT and so you won't feel the slightly more nimble feel of a C2 or the weight saving but you would always notice the fact it looks 10x better. The 4wd will be handy unitl you get used to the 911's characteristics as the TT is understeer city in comparison. £45k is plenty to be a good one however make sure you fit the sports exhuast.

(I went from a chipped S3 to the a Boxster S and am now saving for a 911 and it has been a good progression)

Yep, try a C2, don't discount it just yet.

I came from an Audi Titty too paperbag

If you have your heart set on 4WD then definately stretch for the C4S - it looks bloody fantastic IMHO

HOWEVER if you are looking to climb onto the fist rung of supercar ownership (hehe) then don't under any circumstances ignore the C2. For a car with 300-320 HP slung behind the rear axle, it handles so well.

I have had mine six months and I really don't think I have got anywhere near reaching its handling capabilities

You DON'T need to start off with a boxster .. the 996 won't bite yer bum unless you're acting the plonker in it .. The only people who warned me off buying a 'widowmaker 911' were those with only bar room bull experience .. i.e. none whatsoever...

yeah - i'd like to reiterate that point...

I came from a Lexus straight to a 911 - with the C2 you'll find she'll 'wriggle' a little at first when you press on through bends, but thats just because you have to set the car up before the bend, and its a different skill to front engined cars..

Her backside kicked out for the first time yesterday - dont believe the horror stories, adrenaline surged but you instinctively correct it, and unless your severely ham fisted or lead footed its hardly a drama (touch wood).

How about the running costs? Is it a case of if you're going to get one then money should be no object? I earn reasonable money but I'm not loaded. I noticed a guy selling his 996 Turbo the other day and spent 3k on a clutch......ouch! Is that the norm or just because it was a Turbo? Obviously running costs aren't going to be cheap but how reliable are the 996's?

well, i looked into them and they seemed very reasonable for the 'type' of car - i dont have a lot of money, and certainly was buying at the bottom end of the 996 market.

The OPC warranty is a must though - its 700 a year, but well worth it for the peace of mind if something does go..

I think 3k for a clutch is the TT - i'm pretty sure the C2 is sub 1k (could be wrong though)..

I don't think you'll pay any more than your mate is paying to keep his Boxster on the road. There's a few of us here that would strongly suggest getting an OPC warranty , to guard against the 'unlikely event' of getting hit with a major bill.
It's worth doing a search here on this subject.. A lot's been said...

I had the same dilemma and went turbo. No regrets. I know what you're coming from is limp compared with the M5 I had, but even so I reckon you'd soon get bored with the n/a engine and RMS worry.

And don't worry -- it's a pussycat.
