Porsche vs Ferrari running costs
Discussion
Just saw this post in the Ferrari forum about the running costs of a 360... We might complain but this makes Porsche ownership sound like a bargain...!!
To date I've run two 997s for a total of 13 months and excluding petrol, insurance and depreciation my costs have been zero (two things fixed under warranty).
************************************************
I have done 25K miles in my 1999 360F1 in just under 2 years.
Hear is a watered down version of the costs
After market warranty (not worth having)@ £995
Set of 19" wheels and tyres @ £2000 (ebay)
Service x 4 @ 650 each = £2600
Crash at Oulton park track day @ £1980
Clutch and front wishbone work @ £2077
Replace front wishbones @ £850
Cam belts and some other bits @ £939
2 x rear tyres @ £644
Replace anti roll bar drop links @ £235
Another clutch + Sports exhaust + challenge grill + stone chips @ £4914
Top up AC and other bits @ 500
Re weld broken CAT @ £684
Fix car after another track day including cam belts cam tensioners 4 tyres and a load of other stuff (no crash involved) @ £4161
Take a average of 14 miles to the gallon = 1785 gallons of gas @ £4.0/gallon = £7140
Total for = £29719 for 2 years my god that’s £14859 a year + insurance and depreciation.
Depreciation is roughly £10000 for 2 years
And insurance is about £1200 per year (for the miles I do)
Total bill for 2 years motoring = £42119 = £21059 per year = £1754 per month = £56 a day = £2.35 per hour (24 hours a day every day)

With respect hardly a fair comparison since you've obviously had 2 new cars still under manufacturer's warranty! What exactly would you expect to spend on a brand new car apart from petrol, insurance and depresciation?
Not arguing that Ferrari's don't cost a lot more of course ...
I was recently considering buying privately a year old F430 for £134k. It probably cost about that when new a year ago and will need a service, the tyres/clutch will have some wear etc. That therefore cost the owner just the petrol/insurance with no depreciation!
Probably not directly comparable since there's a fair amount of track damage in that list... I'm sure you can run a Ferrari for less than that - if you're crashing at track days then you're probably driving very hard and being harsh on the car
I doubt running a Ferrari will ever be as economical as running a Porsche (of similar types - no comparing 308s to Carrera GTs), though the GT3 track hounds must run up big bills given how hard the cars are driven...
My 993 is costing me quite a lot this year, though that's got a lot to do with me wanting to keep the car and doing loads of preventive maintenance and upgrades...

Glup!!
To be fair alot of the expense was to do with cosmetic/performance enhancement.
Tell you what though - was very surprised each service only cost £650 - thought they would be more than that.
In my view the main difference between the two marques is useability. A 996 is an everyday, every condition car, irrespective of its age/spec (although I wouldn't fancy doing 15K PA in a GT3 RS)
A 360 is just a money pit headache. Fantastic car BUT ownership seems only ever likely if money REALLY wasn't an issue and applies to only a very small fraction of us (certainly not me - I will struggle to find the cash for a new set of boots for mine!!)
BUT it is official - A Porsche is the true supercar for everyone - "The Peoples Car"........ oh didnt someone (in)famous in history describe the Beetle as that

360's have a reputation, although i couldn't tell you if it was deserved. Also I think people are a bit worried about stuffing them as the repair bills won't be cheap. It's the same with most lambos on the track.
However occasionally you do see one being driven properly and they're not slow.

I seem to remember a year of running my TVR Cerbera was about the same. I did a little page on it when I sold it.
<..looks..>
Ah, here it is: www.pikeynet.com/stuff/runningcosts.htm Written Aug 2001. There are finance charges and fuel as well in there.
Reading back through it (I'd forgotton it all!), I note remembering why I would buy privately in the future. So I guess that means KayC and I agree on something!

Sounds like Verdis... very reasonable costs compard to main dealers. But remember, Ferrari service intervals are twice as frequent as Porsche ones (from memory)... ie every 6k rather than every 12k. So that would be equivalent to £1300 for a service in real comparison terms (plus twice the hassle of dropping it off/collecting it).
Hi
I used to own an 84 Mondial 3.2....I now own a 928...4,7
Costs are roughly the same for parts...both companies get really silly on some parts...but on average they would be similar....barring any major bumps...as Ferrari body parts are astronomic...lol
Fuel costs were also roughly the same...
So it boils down to LABOUR COSTS....
I do the labour myself so ...I think you will find its the labour cost that makes the BIG difference...My local OPC is £120 per hour.....I imagine these days that Ferrari dealers are more ... ???
All the best Brett

I think it is even better now. 987, 997, Caymans and Cayenne's are all on 20,000 PA service intervals
I have run a 993C2, 993 Turbo, and a 355. Other than a cambelt service (OK which I did have to bend over for), the 355 cost me bugger all to run. It drank fuel like a fish, but was no more expensive than the 993's to run other than that. Even the insurance was cheaper than the 993T4!!
Unfortunately it did blow up on the hard shoulder of the M25, but that's another story altogether....

The other key factor is how frequently the parts wear out or break. Fuel costs were also roughly the same...

In this respect there is definitely a difference between Ps and Fs.
