Thinking of buying early boxster, as have modest budget of £15k! Been trying to do a bit of research but can anyone advise of the following;
- The early 2.5 seems to have premature engine failure issues i.e. thermal cracking of cylinder liners...how common in % terms and what sort of mileages do they tend to break? Was the proble isolated to the 2.5 and sorted on the 2.7?
-Rear main oil seal...ref to above similar question!?
-Cracked expansion tank? How common ..sorted on later models?
-Anyone know of local specialist well rated service engineers...live in Taunton, Somerset.

Any thing else should look out for? Many thanks for any help guys, cheers!

I can't answer your first question, however I ran a 2.7 Boxster for three years and 75000 miles.

It was always OPC serviced and has no mechanical problems whatsoever except repalcement of two RMS - both covered under warranty

Dont look for an early Boxster £15k will get you a 2.7, a high mileage 2.7 is a better buy than any 2.5. Dont go for looks. any shabby boxster can be brought back to life and the improvements each model year are massive like always buy the newest plate an original car is better than a old nail thats been tarted up, thats in my opinion and my opinion is worthless like everyone else??

Yep just what I thought, but to be fair to the legendary Porsche reliability, the car covered 75,000 red lined hard miles. It didn't let me down once, didn't drink a drop of oil, had no electrical problems and was as tight and firm as the day it was delivered (well almost hehe)

Look around for the best deal you can find.
Get a porsche extended warranty.

2.5L are a little under powered compared to most 2.5L cars and most are very basic inside.

Go for either a 2.7L or see if it can stretch to a 3.2L

But definitly a warranty !!

Header tanks are not so common at cracking on boxsters but do happen through out the ages and range of boxsters.

Rear mains well we wont go there they will be ok till clutch replacement.

Get it inspected independantly of the garage who is selling it.
