I'm not sure how many people know, but the Cayman S acts like a Harrier Jump Jet when really, really hot.

I first noticed this in Le Mans, with the outside temp at 37, the car running idle and a delicate (!) lady sitting inside in the cool.

What seems to happen is the car is exceptionally hot and it makes an extra effort to cool down. As well as the cooling fans in the side vents being on, it also has "mega" fans in the front, apparently under the headlights, pointing down and blowing things around.

It's particularly apparent when you on someone's dusty driveway with everyone crowded around to wave you off. As you're saying your goodbyes... "WOOF" - it turns into jump jet mode, a dust bowl appears and everyone staggers off coughing, spluttering and rubbing their eyes.

This is quite excellent, as I like having this power, but can anyone tell me what is going on?! Why does it need these huge fans and what are they cooling?

Alternatively, can I take off vertically?

That's an idea from the marketing to make the Cayman a bit more bad boy!

996 and boxter are the same they blow cool air over the 2 front rads to cool engine coolant and A/C rads if you have A/C fitted.

Oh yes, never noticed rads there.

I had assumed they were next to the rear air / side intakes, but thinking about it, it's obvious that they run out of air! Doh!
