Hi Folks,

So I have a Porsche PCM Phone setup in my Cayman S. It's a pain having to take the sim out my 'phone and plonk it into the dashboard sim holder each time - not least because my 'phone loses its time settings.

So...I've found out I can get a duplicate sim and my plan was to leave that in the car permanently.

My question: I'm guessing that both carphone and mobile will ring when someone calls me? If so does the the unanswered one shutup when I answer the call? Could you (in theory!) make two different calls at the same time? Any other problems with this plan I need to be aware of? Sorry if it's a daft question - I've never had a sim-card car phone before.

Thanks!

The SIM card set up in Porsche's is a joke... I have this on my 997. You get a bluetooth system in a standard 3 series BMW nowadays..!!

However, the penalty for getting caught using your phone in traffic is 3 points so that's not really an option either. I therefore do what the OPC sales guy recommended.

I bought a pay as you go SIM card and put that in the PCM. I then programmed that number as one of my 'diverts' on my mobile. Now every time I get in the car I simply press a button on my mobile that diverts all calls to the car. Means its quick simple and you don't have to change SIMs everytime.

I try not to make too many calls when driving so suits me perfectly.

with 2 sims you have to turn one off before the other is switched on, I asked O2 about this a couple of months ago and they said they would not give me a duplicate sim becuase their system will see it as a clone and drop both sim's.

in holland we had duplicates but I think it was down to the operator (KPN) allowing them.

Orange said the same - divert to another SIM is best option.

Folks - update on this.

I got another sim from Orange on the same number. Plonked the new sim in the Cayman. Cost £30 for the new sim.

They've set it up so that if the car phone is active (ignition on etc) it rings the car phone. If not, it rings my mobile. Works a treat - in the car works perfectly and if not it rings the mobile as before. You can even use both at the same time - receive a call in the car and pass the mobile to someone else to make a different call.

Think it's called "dual sim - single number" but I believe it's only available for business accounts?

If you are an Orange Premier customer they send you a spare sim, in case your phone is ever lost or stolen.

This sim can live in the car and you just turn off the mobile whilst the car is in use.

Just out of interest - How do you know whether you are an Orange "Premium" customer or not ? - if its anything to do with your monthly bill being 100 quid or so, and them having been fleecing you as such for the last god knows how many years i guess i might be

The C4 im picking up tomorrow has PCM, i was wondering how it worked. I think i have alot of manual reading to do.

They send you through a credit card thinky with a spare sim in it and if you call customer services, the system routes you straight off to a customer services rep.

It did cost me anything but I have been with them for over 15 years and can't remember when I last had a bill for less than £100

I was about to order a dual sim.. Not sure about the other providers but Vodafone will happily give you a dual sim on your business account.. It's free too.. What they didn't freely tell me was that any calls made from my newly enabled "dual phone number" immediately lose the benefit of free minutes and any free cross network calls. When I questioned this "feature" the Vodafone operator advised me that most people who can afford to get a second sim for their car phones don't usually quibble about losing their free minutes.. Cheeky, but a very good answer to shut me up....

PAYG sim, with a mobile divert I think..
