Well I just went mad & bought a 944. Its an s1 & has had 8.5K spent on it in the last 18 months. (Jaz engine etc.) So I'm hopeing its not too bad.
Question is am thinking of sending it to hartech porshe for a checkover as I bought it private. Probably will cost nearly a grand though. Is this place good or just expensive.
Next thing is insurance. I cant get classic cover 'cos its may daily drive. Not too expensive but the car has boxter alloys. Insurance companys dont like them much! How you get round it?
Is the porshe owners club just for the 911 crowd. Or is it realy worth the money?
Grateful for some advice. Think I may need lots.

no its not just for the 911 crowd, all porsche owners are welcome but sometimes I think some of the snobs with sandals and beards should lighten up (think 50 year olds who have spent all their lives saving for a 911 and now they have one want to belittle others who aint, pretty sad I recons)

Hartech know 944s inside and out. One of the best Independants in the country with a very good reputation, good value for money.

The PCGB is massive and has something for everyone, personally I prefer track days and motorsport orientated activities but there are plenty of 'show' type events or even just pub meets. The 944 Register is the second biggest section in the club (we've just been overtaken by the Boxsters) and I help to run it. Come along to a few club events and then make up your own mind before joining

Thanks for the replys.
Why these cars are so cheap right now. I've probably paid top doller for mine at £3500. But its a thing of beauty. If I ever saved up for a 911 I would be afraid to go out in it.
Yes I could get some old alloys & refurbish them but I like the ones that are on. How can insurance companys expect a car thats almost 20 to be standard I dont understand.
Will ring up Hartech & book it in. Then I will find out if I've been ripped off or not! Might make it easier to sell later with a Hartech service record.
Is there a more motor sport orientated club for these cars? Track days & hill climbs more my thing too.

Nurburg - if you're thinkin of takin it to Hartech then you must live in the North-West?
If so, then why not come along to the NW Region meet of the Porsche Enthusiasts Club. We're meeting tomorrow night (Monday) from 7.30pm at the Dressers Arms, Brinscall near Chorley!
Btw, Hartech are very good - I bought my first 944 off them and had my second 944s2 serviced there. V.Good people.

I'm a TiPEC member & RO & most who join TiPEC reckon that PCGB do nothing for & have no interest in the front engined stuff & that's certainly been my perception whenever I've met them.
In the dozen or so who come to my meets it's 98% 924/944 or deratives. Whereabouts are you, might be worth going to a TiPEC regional meeting at sometime?

Also go to www.tipec.net/ & www.porsche-1.net

Hartech know there stuff but I must say they are so thorough you can easily kiss £1000 goodbye.I have used all the indies in the northwest and Loe bank motors Near Ramsbotom are very very good .The owner Chris is a porsche nut and has good links to the porsche clubs.01706826060.

Thanks scruffy 101 and you are quite right that Chris Sanderson is very good - and there is more than enough work for us all to handle without competing - but I wasn't really sure if your comment about our thoroughness, was a criticism or praise - or if the implication was that you just turn up unexpectedly to find a huge bill you knew nothing about - so I would just like to make the point that all our prices (especially our service fixed prices) are competitive and we never do any work without authority (unless - extremely rarely - when it is very minor or absolutely essential for safety or for the customer to get home and we perhaps had difficulty contacting them).

That being the case our extremely thorough work and checks come at no more cost (in fact are comparatively free) and if they reveal more problems than others (that need addressing) and the customer wants to have them repaired the choice is to have the problems found in time or await the consequences when they do eventually cause a bigger problem when they go wrong.

We always try to contact the customer with an advisory breakdown of priorities and costs and discuss each and any issue they want to raise - and allow them to decide what they want doing next. If they want nothing else done that is OK by us - we feel that by informing them of the problems we have fulfilled our responsibilities and obligations and if they ignore our advice - it is on their head so to speak. We also build into our prices discounts when the service has already covered some additional work.

We don't find faults that are not there - and we do not exagerate our findings - we only find some faults that others may miss - at no extra cost!

Baz Hartech.

No Baz no complaints from me, I bought a 944 off a guy who bought it from you (C515MAM) and i had it serviced with you untill i sold it.My point was 944s can still give you a shock when they are serviced properly.

I take it you bought it with the Boxster alloys, or did you fit the boxster wheels afterwards?
Just sell them on ebay and buy original 944 alloys with the money you make off them. If anything, you will probably make money that way, or be able to buy alloys/tyres in better condition than the Boxster alloys as there is less demand for them.

You can get classic insurance for daily drivers, I use Heritage for my 944 and they wil let you do that.

Do you have a second car though???
I have only the one. Thats the problem. If I bought a runabout I could get it but by the time I've paid for the mot & another insurance + extra tax & running costs. Its not worth it.
Agreed value would be nice But its worth so little anyway it doesn't make much difference. The car I just sold booked at 1500 But I sold it for 2500! Thats a modern car. Would have still cost me a grand if it was written off. More if you add the excess.

Congrats for purchasing one of the best handling and best balanced cars of all times, and certainly from the era when it was built. I have two of them and they're constant entertainment and superb drivers with great reliability. There are two prime issues you must tend to.

Firstly you must know of the age and miles on your timing belt, and if there are any questions about it, change it without looking back. If you're within the published limits, have the tension checked and you're off the hook.

Secondly, change out the fuel injection system relay now, on your schedule. They have a life span and they don't last forever. If you pop in a new one, you're good to go on 99% of the 944 reliability issues. Beware, on an electronically controlled fuel injection car like a 944 (and virtually all other Porsches from the demise of mechanical injection forward) if your alternator goes out, you'll have mere seconds to react to find a place to coast safely into a parking place. I've been there, done that, and was lucky. I'm not saying to replace your alternator, but when they fail, your battery will start being hard to charge, and it's a signal your alternator is on the downward spirial, never to return. Rebuilt units are easy to swap out.

If you're into the wasserpumpers, as you must be, take a look at the MASTER INDEX file on this web site, becuase there's a lot of good stuff there for the 944, 968 and 928 guys.
