Also might be a good idea to hear a system before it's taken off the vendors car?

Trust me on this, if you can't spend the right cash for the right exhaust (i.e Europipe, Cargraphic, Supersprint(Techart), Manthey, Ruf, 9ff 2nd gen variotune), just don't otherwise you'll be spending the money twice!
I'd keep an eye on Ebay as well but whatever you do DON'T go cheap on a Turbo...
Make a search on some well known American Porsche forums take some of the statments with a grain of salt and make your choice within one of the exhausts I wrote above which in case you haven't noticed are all European for a reason, they're designed a sound the way we in Europe like best.
And yes, I got a 996 Turbo myself, I've had my share of exhaust testing and yes I presently have an Europipe... (www.europipe.be)

If you choose the cargraphic make sure its the Euro quiet version as they make them Euro style loud and American style loud (LOUD). Its considered to be up there on the top of the exhausts for the Turbo specially power wise, the best thing about these systems though is the fact they're designed by RS Tuning and you can later buy an ECU from them (or Cargraphic for the same effect) with the 508bhp kit to go with the exhaust. Since you're new to Porsche turbo ownership you probably don't know who RS Tuning is, let me tell you they're blood expensive and they're customer service sucks (you can always go with Cargraphic which had their kits done by RS tuning) but they're considered THE specialists on turbocharged Porsches with proven results on the track, they're one of the very few companies which cooperates with Porsche (like Manthey, Farn.,etc).
kiko you have been a great help thanks very much the car has already had a 500 bhp ecu re-map by dtm might have that name wrong but its 3 letters like that dme poss, anyway this was done about 500 miles before i got the car as the last owner was a good friend of mine but he did not get the exhaust as he wanted to keep it as hus hus as poss he got a pannel filter and uprated diverter valves also but the car sounds choked with the standard exhaust and i,m sure (wishing) it should make a good performance gain due the fact its had the re-map, its prob not even running 500 bhp with out the sport exhaust anyway, it is a lot quicker than a standard car i,ve drove mind thanks again you,ve been a star
You're probably talking about DMS, is it? You're certainly not doing 500bhp then or if you do you're overreving the turbos which they (DMS) have been acused of doing on their software. How boost are you doing? (stable and peak boost) Whatever you're doing its going to make an extra 0.1bar with the exhaust and the K16's shouldn't be doing more than 1,0bar peak (0,9b stable). The exhaust will make a noticeable leap in power and added driving pleasure for the sound track. As an added bonus some companies (like 9ff) claim that the free flowing exhausts are vital on modded ecu Turbo's as they say the performance exhaust will get rid of the extra heat generated that will otherwise kill the turbos in the long run.
Try the classifieds........ Here is one, maybe some others.....

hi dms thats the one the max boot shown is 0.9 bar thats the highest its ever been as far as i,ve seen thanks for the links i,ll have a look now been away for couple of day so not replyed sorry i,ve been told it wont be running at 500 bhp till i get the exhaust fitted cant wait to feel what it like then because it scares me now, what happens if the turbos do over rev will it damage them or is that just the max power they can deliver
hi benno i also had a fabspeed system fitted to my n/a 996 i had before this one and loved it, but i,ve been told there not so good on the turbos for whatever reason. i even had the straight through gt3 cup system and it was mental good for the odd weeend if you could be bothered to swop them over and avoid the police it actually made the car slightly slower even though they (fabspeed) clam a power hike
