GT2 Advice Needed!
Discussion
Hi,
I have been looking into upgrading my 911 to something a bit more special. I currently have a 1999 996 C4 with the GT3 bodykit styling. More importantly I want something faster, better handling and maybe something less common so to speak etc etc.
I have test driven a 996 GT3 and Turbo. Like the GT3, but now have started considering GT2s. Have seen a modified 02 model with a lot of techart work done, engine upgrades to 520bhp and techart wheels and other work interior and exterior. But I keep reading maybe some negative comments about the first versions of the GT2. Having owned a 1986 SC and a 964 I am aware that the older versions need more respect, but haven't really experienced that on the later version 911s. I also am thinking about the later model GT2 on a 2004 plate, seems like a lot of people state this is a much more sorted car, with better suspension setup and better brakes? I don't know how true this is? The car I am considering here also has an engine upgrade with 530bhp. Its on for 80k - is that too much? The techart one had 20ks worth of additions but they wanted 85k for 2002 plate with 16k on the clock which I think is too high by far. The 2004 model only has 3k on the clock.
Any comments on this would be really appreciated, I guess I am also slightly worried about the PCCB, I dont want to buy a car that needs a bomb spent on new brakes. And yes, I will do track days.
Thanks
Dave

You can get good GT2s for high 60's so I wouldn't spend 80k on one IMHO of course. Also - don't buy a car with PCCB if you are going to use it on track, they will fail pretty quickly.
My vote is with the GT3 - (im bias) - its a superb car and great fun... You can get a decent spec MKII for mid 50s or MKI for high 40's which is great value for money

would not touch a TackArt car with a barge pole but that is just my personal taste - I think their cosmetic work is awful, 460-480bhp is easily enough, and an unmolested car would be a much better bet
I believe 2004 car had Corsa tyres, GT3 style wheels rather than turbos (purely cosmetic), tweaked suspension geometry (something a specialist could replicate on an older car?)
why not get an 02-era car for 60-65 and budget 2/3k for Alcon brakes?

this guy is selling a absolutely stunning GT3 in speed yellow, the car is flawless...www.petrolheads.co.uk/gassing/profile.asp?h=0&memberId=34855&f=48

Never heard Techart called Tackart before, funny though cos if you flick through any Porsche magazine you'll see an advert for Specialist Cars of Malton with their GT2 RS on it, that virtually the same look as the Techart model I am looking at (which is also one of their RS's) - and you think it looks bad?? Its a simialr look to the suggested yellow GT3, which I agree looks awesome. The car I am looking at also looks identical to the GT Street, I just missed one of those - I guess that looks tacky too huh ;-)
So far 2 views on PCCB, one positive one negative - so thats confusing. I actually pulled up next to a GT2 at the lights today on my way to work, roll cage and bucket seats, looked nice, must have been an earlier model as on older wheels.

Im pretty confident that sportsandclassic is being sarcastic / taking the p
s as it is well known that ceramic brakes fall apart on track. Do a search for PCCB on this porsche forum and have a look for yourself! Forgot to say that I know Glenns yellow GT3 well and it is lovely.. it has also had the Manthey treatment.

I've had one for three months, it's my eight 911 and it is just so much better than anything I've ever driven, I still can't believe how strong the performance is. Don't believe the hype either, I've done about 3000 miles in all sorts of conditions and the only incident I've had was in the first hour of driving it, a bit of tricky twitching under hard braking whilst on my mobile phone(so driving like a w*nker). Yes, it spins it's wheels and fishtails in third gear in the dry, but it's a piece of piss to control. Speak to anyone who owns one and they all say the same - superb cars which suffer a bad reputation due to internet gossip from people who have never driven them.
Regarding the GT3 comparison, look for a guy on here called LincsGT2. He had a GT3 for about three years before switching. Night and day. Buy one, you won't regret it. I agree with the post about cars being valued late 60s (unless an 04 model).

Simon,
Thanks for positive comments, how much do you think the 04 models are worth? Which year do you have and is it standard power? Each one I have considered has power upgrades. Are you running on PCCBs?

Mine's an 03 model with standard 462 bhp and PCCBs. I'd have thought an 04 model with low miles has got to be worth 80k+, although I don't believe the stuff about improved suspension (I'd be happy to be proved wrong). Everything about the ride and handling of mine is terrific, and the brakes are fantastic. When they need changing I'm not sure I could justify the cost of ceramics again though.

Hey you asked for opinions, I gave you mine but its just my opinion which you are happy to ignore - I see Techart ads in most magazines which show various marques incl RR, Merc and Porsche with horrible bling chrome wheels and very unfortunate bodykits. You can almost see the tears in their headlights. I am sure its all well-made but I just think its tasteless.
The GT2 is a fantastic looking car, just enough aggression without being OTT, why ruin it with thrills it doesn't need?
I have seen Malton's GT2 RS Evo thing, just taken a std GT2 and randomly sprayed intakes / mirrors / grilles silver and fitted spoke alloys and maybe different wing - IMHO the std wing and alloys look better and a colour coded black car looks far nicer. All IMHO.
Cosmetics aside I think a std car is a better 2nd hand bet esp. if you want one that will be young enough to still be in warranty (and the mods will make it void) - is 456/478bhp in a non-PSM rwd not enough?

...462 in pre '04 model.
I think (could be wrong) the quoted 462/483 are PS figures (why do Porsche do this rather than just use bhp like the rest of the car world? Catches most magazines out too). 1PS = 0.99bhp or something close.

Dave,
If you are looking for a GT2! then you will not be disapionted. I have owned and raced meany Porsches and the GT2 is by far one of my faverets! Mine is an slightly modified (engine department only) 04' model which I think is absulutly fantastic in looks and neck renching performance. The 04 model or MK2 has revised geomatry setings and slightly more power along with other minor tweeks over the MK1, not that there is anything wrong with the mk1 model. But if you have the choise between MK1 and MK2 its worth spending the extra time and money to find a good straight MK2 (04) model. Compaird to a GT3, the GT2 will be quicker round any circuit in the UK and a lot quicker in most long European circits in the right hands, There is a slightly different technique to geting the most out of the GT2 compaired to a GT3 but once masterd and having the GT2 set up properly like most GT3 owners do when tracking there cars nothing can come close to the experiance of a GT2. Value for money, Any GT2 MK1 or MK2 will blow you away in performance! and if modified slightly will keep up with and beat far more exotica costing hundreds of thousands pounds more as I found out a couple of weeks ago at Paul Ricard circuit with a couple of Enzo's and carrera GT's!.
So go on and find the right GT2 and have the time of your life!!

Mark,
Thanks for the reply. What have you actually had done to yours when you refer to getting it set up right. The car I may the the option to buy is a 2004 with 3k on the clock, with an engine upgrade to 530bhp, thats all I know yet. I don't think the handling/suspension has be modified.
Cheers
Dave

Adam,
You are right I did ask for opinions and thank you for yours. I guess I didn't expect someone to directly critise my taste in techart but thats your view and fair enough. Anyway, your comments on other areas were of use and reading some other comments by owners of GT2s have been good too. Cheers Dave

Did not mean to criticise your taste, just present my own. Inevitably where the former differs from the latter, it may appear as criticism - apologies if so as this was never intended.
Best of luck in your search for what I am sure will be a great car.
