Inspection near Manchester
Discussion
Anyone know someone who could inspect a car for me near Manchester? I've used Peter Morgan before but I think this is outside his geographical range.
The car in question has been looked after by a garage near Bury called Low Bank Motors. Has anyone heard of them or, even better, have a number as I can't find anything on the internet.
Thanks a lot.

Anyone think there'd be a conflict of interest if i actually got Loe Motors to do the inspection (if they've been servicing the car)? Anyone here used them before?
I'm looking to buy on the basis of an inspection without actually seeing the car because it's 200 miles away.
Cheers.

Chris Sanderson at Loe Bank has been in the business longer than most local "specialists" and was Porsche trained, I have known him for years and would trust his opinion although as you say there may be a slight conflict of interests. Aside from ourselves you could also ask Hartech of Bolton or John of Unit 11 who is also in Warrington.
Hello
If struggling i would gladly have a look at a vehicle for you as previously said i am in mobberley knutsford and am a porsche specialist...web site www.sportsandclassic.com
and yes to your question you want a independant inspection seperat to the people who have been servicing / looking after the vehicle...well thats my opinion anyway.
Thanks

Firstly, Chris Sanderson of Loe Bank knows his stuff and I see no reason why he should have a conflict of interests (as he is not responsible for the work his previous customer may have approved or not) and he has a good reputation. Indeed I think that someone that knows a car has the best chance of assessing it and advising on its suitability and shortcomings.
We however have a different view of checking over a car than most specialists. We feel that you can easily overspend on a pre-purchase check that either advises against purchase (therefore money down the drain - not in saving you making a bad decision but after checking several cars it mounts up to a lot of money) or still cannot reveal the inner problems that may emerge during a full service inspection requiring parts like cam covers to be removed etc.
So we advise that all Porsche specialists can assess a car quite quickly to establish if it is worth buying or not (thats what they do when they buy one).
We will (for example) have a brief look around and a road test for about £50.00 + Vat (depending upon the model) and if it includes any diagnostic checks up to £100 - after which - if the car is bought - we think the money is best spent on a thorough service check over that includes cylinder compresion checks and 4 wheel laser alignment check etc - to properly assess the car and ensure all the right parts are fitted and working properly. However we are not overkeen on doing this (being far too busy) and are certainly not touting for the business ourselves (we are all flat out anyway) and we can only find the time if the car is brought to us here in the factory - but we do belive too much is often spent on this first stage.
Once it is bought - take it to the specialist you intend to use in the future (so they have a vested interest in finding and sorting faults and problems and satisfying you - their new customer) for a thorough check over and service (even if it has been done recently) - unless you intend to use the same specialist that previously service it (in which case you may decide to leave it until the due date - if he has been open in his assessment of any problems with the car).
Good luck,
Baz Hartech

thanks for all the advise. i've spoken to chris at loe bank and he sounds like a really straight guy. it's the owner i'm more worried about! the price is low and there's the suspicion of accident damage so, if i can get hold of the owner again who seems to have gone awol, an HPI check might be the best place to start.
so......
the good news is the HPI check was clear as far as finance, chassis numbers and accident damage goes and Chris at Loe Bank tells me it's basically a "sound" car that needs to be driven, although he's going to give it a full inspection for me anyway.
the bad news is that there's an iregularity with the mileage. the only mileage logged with hpi was for 176k in 2001. it currently has 84k. the service book seems to support the 84k (chris has checked it for me) and shows that the car has been looked after by the main OPC Evans Halshaw at which point there's a few missing years before it was worked on by Chris for the last two services. it's a '96 car and the schedule is 96-12k, 97-24k, 98-35k, 99-48k, 00-59k, 02-72k, 05-80k, 06-84k. i just can't believe that the car could have done 176k miles in less than 5 years. and the woman at hpi did say that there are often mistakes made on mileages.
the other bad news is that, despite owning the car since 2002, the current owner hasn't put his name on the v5 and it's still in the name of the previous - and first - owner. he says he will put his name on but obviously that will add an owner to the records.
if it wasn't a great price i'd walk away but it's a rhd, '96, 993 c4 with the exact spec i'm after for sub-£19k. and the alternatives are all £23k +.
my plan is to get the owner to put his name on the v5, have the inspection done and then, if all's well, travel up with a bankers draft. i haven't given him a deposit but the car is essentially mine if i want it.
any views would be gratefully received.
thanks

That alone would set alarm bells ringing if it was me. Why is he selling it for £4K less than most other similar examples? Desperate to sell quickly and raise cash?
I'm in the market for a 993 and have been looking (off and on) for a few months now. All the sub-£20K 993s I've seen advertised have all been LHD, Cat Ds, mega-mileage or have been horribly neglected.
I'm a cynic at heart and work on the principle that if something is too good to believe, is usually is and there's a reason.....

- Owning the car since 2002 and has not put his name on the v5 ?
- Irregular HPI mileage ?
- Very cheap for the details given
- can't contact the previous owner
All these things add up to something a bit fishy to me. Also when it comes to sell you may have a few problems with other people being paranoid too.....
Maybe you could speak to the original owner to get their take on it.
Apologies for being so negative but I wouldn't want your 911 experience ruined. Don't rush into it until you are fully satisfied. Alternatively you might be geting the bargain of the century !

thanks for the comments.
chris at loe bank is doing the inspection including having a good look at the paperwork. i'll then make a decision after that. i haven't put down a deposit - and won't be - so i could even travel up myself with a bankers draft, see the car, meet the owner and take a call on it then.
should i insist that the seller puts his name on the v5 now? he's offered to do so. he says he just filled in the trade slip on the v5 because he wasn't sure how long he'd keep the car or what he was going to do with it. what would make the purchase safest?
i will see if any of the paperwork has the details of the original owner too.
cheers.
