997 GT3/GT3RS on order?
Discussion
I have a 997 GT3 RS on order. However I have a major issue which needs to be addressed sometime in the not to distant future.
Noise levels. At 108db static I have no chance of getting onto Bedford, Castle Coombe, Goodwood, Thruxton and probably several other UK circuits.
Really useful as the main reason for buying the car is track days.
I would appreciate a response (via e-mail direct to GT3reg@aol.com) from anyone who has one of these cars on order because ultimately come the day of commiting to the car I may have to say no to spending the thick end of £100,000 on a car I can't use in the way I want to.
I intend to post this on PCGB site, titanic.co.uk/GT3 and Stuttgart 9's. If you can post a copy on other relevant sites I would appreciate it.
Regards
Gary

There will surely be an aftermarket available soon after launch to bring noise down to less than 105dbs... thus allowing 'noisy day' attendance. Must admit that it's odd for a factory Porsche to have such a loud exhaust as standard. Even a decatted and J-piped 964RS is quieter, IIRC?

Are you saying that a standard GT3 or GT3RS is 108dB.....? I doubt that as I've seen plenty at Bedford and they require 101dB max.
Yup - thats what the nice man from Porsche GB told us... 108dB static as standard...
edited to say - this is the noise test for the new car not the old one!

Its difficult to get a 360 CS anywhere near a circuit, and that's road legal.
On a slightly different note, this Carrera GT is really loud:

Surely this can't be correct. 108db is very loud.
At what rpm are static tests done on a GT3?

Porsche Reading say that the GT3 records 108db at 5700rpm. This is significantly higher than the usual c.4500rpm static measurement at most UK circuits. It is also possible that 5700rpm is above when the butterfly valves open and make the car a lot louder than what it is when the valves are closed. The question is, at what rpm do the valves open, and what is the static measurement throughout the rev range?

Is that not because the drive-by road noise test is done at an engine speed before the exhaust bypass valve kicks in on any 360 (or an AMV8/Vanquish for that matter), but most track-day noise tests have a higher rpm?
GT3 doesn't have a bypass valve, so hopefully it stands a chance of passing a track test if it manages to be road legal?

Oops sorry Polarexpress, didn't read this before posting my response, I didn't realise there was such a system on the GT3?

The Euro road test I believe involves a certain engine speed at a steady load (amongst others). The Ferrari's bypass system is designed to specifically get it through this test, and it took them a few attempts to get it right. Thus there is not a specific engine speed at which the valves open, but more a combination of load/engine speed.
