944 Turbo, what are they like to live with?
Discussion
ive said before im not a huge fan of the 996/997s not that i think thier a bad car they just dont appeal like the older ones, im thinking about getting a 930 Turbo in a year or two but quite fancied giving a 944 Turbo a try as a daily commuter car in the mean time seeing as how thier so reasonably priced, and for thier age quite speced up-leather,Climate Control etc, i was just wondering what thier like reliability and build wise and are ones with 100000 miles or so likely to cause problems? also what year/condition would i be loking at getting for £4-£5k?
Any Turbo for 4/5k will be a recipe for disaster, I wouldn't spend any less than 7k personally.
Turbo's are just like any 944, reliable IF they have been serviced regularly and properly. If you get a good un, they are a reliable and surprisingly practical day to day car,
I've had 2 944's now (Lux & S2) and they are incredibly good value,if you buy wisely, and are prepared to be patient when searching.
I'm after a late Turbo S when I sell the S2,just to complete the set!
before moving on to a 964/993.
Best bang for your buck available imo, (especially the Turbo), and I'm still being surprised with what the S2 can keep up with at trackdays.
There's a lot of rough 944's out there...Buy a cheap one at your own risk.

HAB is spot on
at that price you could be very lucky and get a good one that the owner has undervalued, but you are more than likely to get a poor example. You will need to spend about twice that amount for a really good one that needs no remedial work to return it to pristine.
Living with them is no problem. I used to do 20k miles a year in my old job, and they soak up the miles very easily. I know several cars in the 150-200k mile mark that are still on the original running gear/engine/turbo.

thanks for the honest advice and opinions guys, it was just something i was considering and having seen a few for around this amount i asumed that was what they were worth if i decide to get one i would rather spend more and get a good one than pay less and get a dog, even if it takes me a while longer to get the cash together
Had my 944S for six years now, its built like brick s%*t house, still pulls like a train and has not cost me very much to run, but I always have a service done every year after about 5K miles, oil comes out still clear and only have 76K on the clock. They may be getting older now but they still put a grin on your face.
As others have said look for full documented service history and you won't go wrong with a 944. Price wise it's better to pay a bit more for a good example than buy cheap and then find you have lots of bills to pay to get the engine right.

This is spot on,they are great cars, mine never ever broke down in five years using it every day!Thats a twenty year old car.Buy the best you can and look at ones in the owners club, they are overpriced but looked after.Turbo's are just like any 944, reliable IF they have been serviced regularly and properly.
