I've never driven a 911, but have been a lifelong fan.

The 993 has to be my favourite shape along with the 89 Turbo and the current 997 wide-bodied cars...

I own a 944 Turbo and have often wondered how different a 911 would feel compared to it.

How would a stock 993 Carrera S compare to something like a 944 Turbo? Is there a world of difference? Is the acceleration more brutal, the handling more sublime? Or is there not much in the performce really and its more about the intangibles?

Its 911 time for me in a year, so whet my appetite please! I neeed to work longer hours!

The 911s have a lot more character, IMO. They represent what Porsche is really about.

Acceleration wise there's not much in it, but you'll love the sound of the 911 engine.

I have owned both and even though 944 diehards defend the old girl to the hilt (and ignore my protestations that I'm a multiple ex-944 owner who loves them and 968s etc., which I do ) I'd still take a 911 any day of the week.

Its a bit like having a child.

The difference between having none and one, is enormous when compared to having one and getting another.
Does that make sense ?

Methinks Yoda, that I am not Jedi material

Jokes aside, I get your drift. Question of finding out for oneself.

944/968s are superb cars but they drive just like other quality sports coupes from BMWV, VW, Audi ( ok perhaps not Audi lol they're much better than that) whereas the 911 feels and drives like nothing else and feel like one level above.

Have had a couple of 968's and a couple of 911's and enjoyed all of them. They do feel very different (the 968 is a more modern/less exciting drive) and on balance I think (I know) I prefer the 911's (is why Ive kept them)or you could do the best of both and have one of each (the 968/964 is certainly more practical)

I've had 911s for 23 years.

In the late '80s I riefly had a new 944 followed by a new 944 Turbo, before returning to 911s. I've also had 968s as courtesy cars.

The front engine/water cooled cars are very different - very competent but lack the character and quality of the 911s.IMO no more special than a BMW.

The Boxster is closer in character to the 911.

Today, I can still enjoy almost any 911 - from the early pre-impact cars, 3.2 Carreras, 996/997s and looking forward to the new GT3. They all feel special. IMO the best variants are rwd/manual/normally aspirated/coupe.

I've got a 993 and a 944t - They could hardly be more different

I've just got back from tracking the 944 at Silverstone and was, as ever, amazed at how easy it is to get hold of, when things start to go wrong.

If anything the shove of the 993 is less brutal, certainly if your 944 is tweaked at all, but its the soul and in many ways sillyness of the 911 which makes it so special.

Firends get in it and turn their nose up at the interior. They ask where all the toys are and are dissapointed when there aren't any. They ask can they have a drive, look at the pedals, get flustered and decline

In amateur hands I'm sure the 944 is the faster car, but the one I love is the 911. It is just so much of an occasion driving it.

But coming from a 944 you really need to test drive one for a decent period of time. You'll probably love it, but if you don't you might wonder what all the fuss is about

Got my 911 (997 - pic in profile) three months ago and love it. Always dreamed of having one and when I scraped enough cash together I immediately bought one.

Doesn't matter which variant (and there's many...) you go for there is genuinely nothing else on the road that has the same sports car performance, build quality, practicality, etc. Also, let's face it.. 911 are just cool..!!

Before you decide - stick a suit on and get yourself down to your nearest OPC - they'll happily let you have a spin in a 996/997 if you look serious enough.

Good luck.

I got my first 911 in 1974. It was a second hand 911E. It had no power steering, the second biggest dial was the clock, the switches were all different sizes and hidden all over the dash, there were no toys, weirdly offset pedals, and a curious set of levers to operate the heater which was some sort of tin can wrapped around the exhaust. But the moment I fired it up and let out the clutch I was immediately addicted. 30 years on I've been through all the usual 3.2 carrera, 930, 993, 996, 996TT, curently have a 997c2s and am expecting a 997tt in the autumn. So be careful, because once you take the plunge you'll be hooked like the rest of us sad gits and there will be no going back.
