new stereo head unit for a 993
Discussion
Does anyone have any experience in fitting a stereo for a 993? The one I have in my 993 is after factory sony single CD unit that jumps on the slightest bump in the road. According to my local car audio shop it can be really difficult and I got a quote of £150 + VAT just to fit a new head unit. It seems a lot but I don't have any experience of fitting a new unit. I would welcome any advice you could give me.
Your stereo shop is trying to trip you off - run away fast!
If you had a Porsche fit stereo then you may need an adapter for the wiring harness (to make it standard ISO) but since you have a Sony head unit, chances are the car's already got an ISO harness (even if it hadn't, they're only £20).
Takes 5 minutes to change the stereo in a 993 - if you are anywhere near Reading, i'll do it for you!

Agree with all the above - head units are simple to fit (Sony units usually use similar extractor tools to remove without scratching the surround - if you can't find the one that came with the original stereo, then replace with another Sony! or borrow a tool. Don't try using screwdrivers etc.).
Do check all the speakers though, it's a bit more involved replacing speakers and the door units can blow if abused. Good quality replacement drivers in the doors sound *much* better as well.

I'd second the Becker recommendation. The new Grand Prix would look great in the 993 and has a Bluetooth phone kit built in too. Approx £400 with an iPod interface which actually works very well. The Alpine 9850Ri is great value but is lacking a little in sound quality compared with similarly priced units (even from with the Alpine camp).
Thank you every one for your kind advice. i was looking at the Alpine with Ipod link built in. To be honest its for the wife. Personally I have no problems in listening to the 993 engine all the way from Nottingham to her folks in Devon but apparently it gets boring! Thinking about trading her in.....
Cheers guys

I just ordered the Alpine yesterday from an ebay seller, £162 + £10 delivery.
It arrived this morning and looks excellent, don't think i'll have time to put it in before the weekend though as need to wire up my sub and amp as well (JL Audio competition sub, right behind the driver's seat).
