Has anyone succesfully fitted a roof bar mounted cycle carrier to a 964 ? Obviously I don't want to risk damaging the car, so I'd be greatful for any recommendations on which bars fit without problems.

Thanks

If you check out the Living the Legend running reports in the current issue of Total 911, Rob Mugglestone has done exactly that. And you can bet your left nut that if there had been any risk of damaging his paint then he wouldn't have done it...

Thule 951 footpack for guttered roofs, 30-odd quid from Halfrauds, plus standard square section Thule bars.
They are rubber coated and don't scratch my roof (the main risk from scratches comes from carelessly mounting to the car, dropping the fittings on the paintwork, rather than damage when in situ).

Ideally you'd use the taller feet (that thule also do) at the rear to keep things level - but that would mean buying two packs. Doesn't matter for a bike anyway

(If you want to buy the taller footpack, I could go halves with you in exchange for 2 short feet!?)

I spotted a 964 cab on the M4 last week with the roof down, a bike rack over the bootlid and a mountain bike on that. Occupants looked quite happy. Don't quite know what happens in respect of operation of the spoiler though.

I used the OE porsche 911 rack with Thule Pro fork bike carriers. Good for 120mph plus! Tried and tested with 2 MTBs.

I seem to recall that Rob Mugglestone had bought two new mountain bikes as well, simply because they were manufactured by a firm called Carrera.

Don't know about now, but a few years back, their top-of-the-range model was actually very good and was something of a bargain. IIRC there were some who talked of buying the bike complete just to strip it for parts (made sense financially) but even that would have been a shame as the frame itself was much better than expected...
