Mk1 GT3 - future classic?
Discussion
You better believe it Andrew... The government puts a vehical registration tax of ... wait for it .. 30 f
ing per cent on all imported cars over 2 litres.
Therefore my 'basement' '99 c2 cost me 65k euro all told (7 months ago). It drives me nuts to think what a tasty bit of porkie pie I could have bought for that money if I was living in the UK.

You Sir, are a hero!
Sorry guys .. I thought you lot knew about the tax system over here. Just for laughs , log onto 'revenue.ie' and click on 'VRT enquiry' .. It enables you to plug in the car details you want to import ,and churns out the tax payable at the end... Note though , that Porsche is mysteriously missing from the car list .. To get a quote for a 911 , you ring your details in , and (if you're lucky) they'll contact you about a week later with the 'slight of hand' quote.
And just for further laughs.....
The current 997 turbo has just been list priced here at .... 206k euro.

can someone over ere but it for you , & you are just "borrowing it" for a while?
But hats off, you must have really wanted one.
You know how the inland revenue work jonny. It's their business to close EVERY loophole available .. If you are found with a car that hasn't had the vrt payed on it , they have the right to impound it immediately .. or even take it from your driveway.
The only way to dodge the vrt is to be living abroad for more than a year , and then decide to move to Ireland , bringing your car with you .. but this can only be done once in a lifetime...
Just ask 'Irish' (lucky bugger!!)

You could buy a 2001 sub 30k Turbo in basalt black with aluminium pack and 5 months remaining on the opc warranty for close to that!

Hey thanks Andrew, Here's your rope back , could you put a noose on it for me
The only thing bout the turbo over here is that there's no 98 ron fuel available so I'd probably burn the turbo out on it pretty quickly anyway...
But I appreciate your caring sentiments! ..
As an aside , you can see that with this much money 'invested' in a 7 year old car , having a porsche warranty can be THE only option , the funny thing is , I'd say only 5% of Porsches in Ireland have warranties renewed on them.

You are probably right about the Turbo. You probably wouldn't enjoy it anyway! Its too fast and not discrete enough!
I feel for you regards the cost, i really do. It stinks you pay so much tax. That said, there are many people who will only ever dream to drive the motor you have.
I'm biased, since I own a MK1 GT3. I think that price is very high, yet I do believe the Mk1 is a future classic. I think it will be the 964 RS of the watercooled generation. Extreme within its generation, not very pretty, but the business. Just like you see plenty of 964 RS today on track days, you will see plenty of 996 GT3 in 10 years. They will have been tuned, like 964 RS are today, to keep up with more modern machinery. Of course the 997 GT3 (and future editions) will be better cars, but they will be seen as too perfect and lacking some character. Mine has some 420 hp and Manthey set-up already and is not exactly slow. But it is pretty useless for everyday transport. I love it for its purpose.

A bigger problem is that there is only one OPC in the Republic and they are not great in terms of servicing and support (alledgedly)
Cayman costs €58,000 while the same car in Ireland costs €97,000! OUCH. RESPECT to KLEONARD for having a GT2

Never mind this 'future classic' nonsense - it's already a classic car. The fortunate few that have owned one will no doubt agree but rest assured it's an incredible piece of kit and, despite a 996TT giving it a pasting in a straight line, the experiences on offer are miles apart. I know where my money would go....
Lots of bleating about how expensive cars are in Ireland!....Thats the price for being intergrated with our european neighbours(cars in denmark are 3 times as expensive as the uk!)..maybe some of the extra car tax paid can be offset against the rather attractive 3% mortgage rates in Ireland adopted from our 'euroland' buddies, compared to 5-6% in the uk.

True, but this is a porsche forum, not an overall finance forum, so the guys have every right to moan, I know I would be.
