924s - I cant wait!

Hiya just signed up as im 21 on the 14th feb i finally get to drive and own a 924s. I know the history of the car as it was my dads and before that my aunt and uncle's. Its getting a new starter at a porsche specalist and a general check over, as it hasnt been driven apart from on and off the drive since march (due to huge insurance for male under 21) when it was relegated by an RX-8 (yeah boo away snobs!). Ive been driving a 57bhp 2002 corsa life since before i passed 3 years ago and can wait to get out of a front wheel drive hatchback! Im a uni student (commence booing again) and i cant wait to park next to a pimped-up golf and feel so much better off. Its a 1986 924s with 150hp when it was new with approx 80-90k on the clock (unknown due to broken mileometer). I just wanted to say hi, and if anyone has any tips or advice plz do tell! Just be careful switching from FWD to RWD, especially in the wet. And keep a look out for maintenance costs. Cheap 924s are notorious for costing more to run than to buy!!! Head gaskets can go, so keep an eye on mysterious coolant loss... ie if you can't see a puddle under the car and the plastic coolant reservoir goes down, or you see oil in the coolant, or undue 'mayonnaise' in the oil filler cap.
Also consider getting the speedo fixed as it's a legal requirement and won't pass an MoT without it.

Congratulations! I'm a fair bit older, but I find a new (to me!) 924s is great. Just watch out on roundabouts when it's wet, when the back starts to swing, be prepared to catch it by steering into the swing. If poss. get some skid-pan tuition (places like Silversone and Goodwood have great deals off peak). As domster said, now you're driving a proper RWD car, it's a whole new game to learn.
Be religious about checking the oil, as older cars tend to use a bit more, and if your 924 has a sunroof, clean the run-off channel tubes. Otherwise you get rusty sills, and a fairly big bill, like me

I am so pleased to hear that not all of male youth want a Jap 4x4b turbo box, or a glow in the dark hot hatch.
The 924S is a little cracker, enough power to have fun and reliable to go with it.
Don't panic about the mileometer, the mot tester is unlikely to spot it doesn't work while it is staionary, But for future sale you will need to show that the mileage / servicing is all in order.

I've had mine for nearly 18 months now and it still makes me smile everytime I get behind the wheel.
As someone has already said, watch out for the head gasket - mine went at 96,000 and it wasn't a cheap job but in my opinion it was worth it.
I've only had one experience (touch wood) of losing the back end and after that invested in some new tyres. Luckily there was nothing around me and no damage done so in some ways I feel this was a good thing as it taught me to respect the car.
The 924S is a great car - enjoy it!

Wish I'd bought a Porsche when I was 21 instead of a dogged out Viva HA van.
Mind you, if I had, I probably wouldn't have bought a house before the 80's housing boom, and therefore probably wouldn't have a 911 now!!

Yeah i hope not to write it off on a roundabout or by any other means! Ive been driving since nov 2002 and havent had a prang yet lets hope the 924s stays clean and dent free im not some chav racer that doesnt know how to control a car but im still gonna be very careful! The book says max of 135mph at 5100 rpm adn the max is 5400 i think, but i dunno how accurate that is my corsa says 96 but i regularly get it passed 110 on stright and level.
