Porsche legend Hans Hermann RIP

I noticed his obit in Motor Sport. An amazing individual, perhaps best known in modern times as the driver of the red #23 Porsche 917 that won the Le Mans 24. I took this pic in the garage f the museum.

He had some extraordinary scrapes in his career, At Avus in 1959 he was flung out off his car as it barrel-rolled down the track, landed on the track,got up and walked away.


Another time he was driving in the Targa Florio and came to a railway crossing gate - as it dropped it was too close to brake so he ducked and drove under tha gate , almost getting claimed by the train.
I was over at Hans-Peter Porsche's wonderful toy museum in Austria one time. Hans-Peter was having lunch with him and introduced me. He was a wonderful warm person. When I was leaving I casually asked him ,"So, what you do drive these days?"..
He leaned over with a twinkle in his eye and said "Mercedes"
