Back on here after a long period of absence.
Recently sold my 993 C2, and now looking to get into another 911. The sweetspot seems to be 991.1, as I prefer the non turbo thing. I've usually been a C2 person, but wanted views on the C4 and it's inherent traits.
Also, what are the must haves... Sport Chrono, PASM...?
Are there any kits/upgrades that allow the standard stereo interface to be Android/Carplay compatible?

Thanks in advance.

in terms of Carplay/Android Auto, you need an aftermarket card and sometimes an external box to provide Carplay. NMAutomotive, Mr12Volt, AutoABC (no ext box reequired) or a NavTV card. You need to open the PCM3.1 and install the card, hook up the looms, store the external box somehere behind the PCM. NMAutmotive kit is well supported by a guy in the UK so easier to liaise with however there's tons of info about the others on various fora and FB etc.

Mr12Volt is sold by one guy who has a network of installers dotted all over the country, I can put you in touch with him if you want.

I love PDK and I'm also now in a 991.2 3.0 car however the NA 991.1s are amazing sounding with PSE.

I have a 991.1 C4S which I am enjoying - it's a great blend of sports car and GT. I've recently come back from a few thousand miles across France in it and it was excellent. I deliberately chose the 991.1 as I didn't want a smaller engine with a turbo - I prefer the dual nature of the car's performance. Quite placid below around 4,000 revs, above that and it starts being a bit wild.

I have my phone on a mount and use Waze on that, I am not wed to Carplay. I have the standard exhaust and it sounds excellent (to my ears) but I do have the chrono and PASM etc. Some say that the chrono package is more attractive for re-sale, others say not. Make sure you get the better steering wheel if you can - paddles not buttons. Many of the other options were unimportant to me - heated steering wheel, 18 way adjustable seats etc.

If you have a warranty, then the Carplay thing might be an issue (not sure) as Porsche tend to be quite picky.

The 4S handles extremely well, although I am not really attempting the Mille Miglia every time I drive it.

Thanks for the replies.
GTS looks great - However, not a big fan of black wheels, and probably more inclined (as age takes hold 😬) to be happy with the standard 400ish bhp.
Would like to daily it, so comfort more important than outright dynamic prowess.
What are the thoughts on seats (bearing in mind the comfort comment). Sport seats look great, and I had the adaptive ones in my old GT3, but are the standard seats more comfortable for every day?

The trouble with the 991 is that is where the 911 starts to have the vibe of a Panamera Coupe. It's lost some of the 911 DNA. Worse with the 992 - a GT car now.

So would you say 997 is peak 911?

I fancy a 911 next but can’t decide what I should go for. I had a 981 GT4 and didn’t find it engaging enough. However that was a few years ago, I’m getting older my opinion might of changed now. It was also my weekend car. I am looking at a 911 as my only car now. However it won’t do many miles as I work abroad and I am only in the uk around 9 months of the year.

I have looked at everything from 996 turbos to 991 turbos and stuff in between. Not sure if I should go newer and get a “lesser” model or go for an older car but a higher spec one.

GTS might be a sweet spot. Bit more raw than a turbo and more useable than a GT3?

I don’t know! Just rambling on here as we are all petrolheads. Who else can I talk to about 911 model numbers!

Try, if you can, to determine how you plan to use it. In my particular case, I specifically wanted a car for taking to France in the summer - the C4S is ideal. It's a great GT car, but it retains plenty of the 911 traits to be driven quickly when needed - but it's not a track weapon.

There are so many different 911 flavours that working out how you're going to use it is a good starting point - but there'll be one out there that will suit.

I have a 991.1 C4S. I find the seats comfortable enough for daily use (although I don't). Longest journey was Bristol to Oulton Park and back in a day (so c.7 Hours seat time). No problem at all not even for my 6ft plus. Only thing is the seat base is quite narrow so if I leave a wallet in my pocket it presses on my hip and makes my leg ache but I think that's a very specific thing to the individual.

If you didn’t find the 981 GT4 engaging then you definitely won’t the 911s you are considering.

You need to try really. They all have their own characteristics and are different in subtle ways

Have a read through this thread, base 992.1 Carrera ownership thread, which the OP was very positive about

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

ETA: I know not 991, but you mentioned newer and "lesser" model.

I thought the S had the valved exhaust anyway, it’s just it doesn’t open until 3.5k revs ?

Love the way mine sounds just on the standard exhaust, way better than 997.2 for sure

Correct.

The PSE option simply allows the valve to open below this. I don't have PSE on mine and the exhaust sounds pretty fruity as it is.
