I think I know the answer to this but I’m going to ask it anyway!
January 2017 718 Boxster so eight and a half years old with 39,000 miles - bought by me at 8 months old and car is immaculate.
Dealer serviced up to 4 years then Porsche independent after that.
I’ve noticed some rust bubbling on all wheel arch edges and internally where the arch meets the wings probably worse on the rears - not visible looking at the car - only discovered by me after taking wheel arch liners off and having a good look around - have to say I was a bit shocked.
There wasn’t much crud there but scraped out anyway and the liners were pretty clean.
How would I stand with Porsche regarding a claim (obviously it hasn’t had the 6 & 8 year body inspection by them)?
Am I wasting my time even asking Porsche?

Always worth asking. I was refused repair work at 4 years on thr bonnet catch as I had not lived close enough to a dealer at the 2 year service. For corrosion at 4 years due to a steel catch on an aluminium bonnet should almost be a recall but NO porsche decided to ignore their car owner in Lincolnshire.
At the end of the day, you drive to the dealer and ask the question. Worst case, they say no.

Yes I agree - Porsche have a bit of a reputation of weedling out of warranty claims but let’s see.
I know people who’ve had BMWs and VW Golfs who have successfully claimed despite not going through main dealer servicing.

I suspect the lack of body inspections at 6/8 years old will be the issue as the corrosion could have been identified earlier with a cheaper repair. Whether they would have removed the liners, identified the corrosion and then told you it was there is a different can of worms.

That said, nothing ventured nothing gained so make an appointment and have a trip.

UPDATE - called at a Porsche dealer whilst out on site visits in North Lincs.
They told me that as the car had not been inspected by them at 6 & 8 years, that voided the bodywork warranty.
This is the longest I’ve ever kept a car (almost 8 years) so it’s a bit of a learning curve.
We used to change our cars every 2-3 years so corrosion has never been an issue.
Lesson learned the hard way.
I’m assuming you could possibly get them to check the bodywork for corrosion every 2 years (obviously at a charge) but then get servicing done out of the main dealer network.

If you are now looking for a bodyshop, do not feel the need to use an official Porsche authorised one as they will have your pants down for a premium. There is a reason why we have a large independent Porsche ecosystem in this country.

Yes I know - I’m already looking at some decent body shops near me.
I’ll avoid the approved ones unless I need a laugh!

Xcp spray available at Halfords is a really good preventative measure for rust in common areas, easy to apply and will near stop it from getting worse.

It has always done well in the amateur corrosion tests.

Would be asking dealer for the paperwork on bodywork warranty - the terms in place when the car was delivered

And then also what is actually checked at the inspection intervals and how checked; would the corrosion have been detected by them anyway

Could also try a different OPC as many people have different experiences (with other questions, not seen corrosion question come up much!)

Sorry to hear this but not surprised. Wheel arch corrosion can be a bigger job to fix than you think. This is a 997 but gives you an idea: it is often much worse than it looks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9PzQjR7Is0

I doubt anyone would look at anything during a service anyway but had it been serviced at an OPC as per schedule would this have been covered then?

Based on my experience, the corrosion check in the service book gets ticked at the same time as the book is stamped for the service. Always worth a quick check to make sure everything that should be ticked is actually ticked.

I suspect plenty of people would not be aware that such a check is performed.
