I’ve owned a number of Porsches over the years and currently have a 991.2 GT3 (23,000 miles) and a 718 Spyder RS (still being run in). They are each weekend cars (no commuting, daily driving, motorways or track), as I live in the north of Scotland and have plenty of nice and empty roads to use. The GT3 currently serves as my winter weekend car (it’s on winter tyres and is fine even on a few inches of snow).

I am pondering a GR Yaris to add to the garage and to offer a different car for the winter, but I’m afraid coming from the GT3 (and cars with engines behind me), I maybe won’t be as enthusiastic as everyone else is about it and end up always picking up the GT3 key. On the other hand, Harry M seems to like his GRY and he’s usually on the money.

Curious therefore if anyone has/did have a GR Yaris in their garage alongside a sporty Porsche and has any thoughts to share ? A 30 minute test drive around some town isn’t going to educate me, so looking for other Porsche and GRY owners who can. I’ve looked on the GRY forums here and elsewhere, but not had any luck finding others who have done this.

Cheers.

I realise it doesn’t answer your question, but:

Having had a selection of Porsche GT and standard products over the years, I would like to suggest you look at the FL5 Civic Type R. I’m currently running one as my daily, and have to admit that the reviews are pretty much bang on. It really is the FWD “GT3” of the hot hatch world.

Having driven a GRY, though they are incredibly good fun, the Type R just has that something extra about it. That bit more fizz and excitement.

And that is having driven them both on roads I’m sure you’re familiar with in the north west Highlands.

Don’t listen to Jack wink

Yes, I have a GR Yaris. Fantastic bit of kit. Mine is lightly modified with camber upgrades, roll bars etc.
Fanstatic tech for the money with switchable driive ratios.
Light weight, keeps up with pork on the twisties and fun daily!

Open the exhaust up with light mods and you have a rally car for the road.

Have toyed with one as a winter car but for longer drives shirt gearing would annoy me plus hassle of short service intervals. If my winter driving was shorter cross country blasts I’d have one in a heartbeat

Have a Yaris alongside my P cars from new.

Different car of course but a great car in its own right, brilliant fun and very usable and I’ve had some fantastic road trips, took it down to Morocco last year and heading off ice driving in Austria tomorrow.

I’ve swapped the dampers, seats and had an engine map courtesy of litchfield, upgraded the audio and sound insulation to make it more usable on long trips.

Thanks all - sounds like I need to get my hands on one. For the type of roads I drive on, I thought it would be good, but was afraid 200BHP less and front engined wouldn’t compare and it wouldn’t be used.

I prefer the idea/looks of the GRY versus the CTR, even through I know from ECOTYs and the like, that it’s a smashing drive too.

I'm running a GR Yaris alongside a Cayman GTS 4.0. Had the Yaris since June 2021 and the Cayman since November 2020.

Really like them both. The Yaris is a real terrier of a car - great fun when you're going quickly but I think it's quite nice to drive at normal speeds too.
Both cars are completely standard and get used in rotation alongside an E90 M3.

If I had to keep only one car, it really would be quite a tough choice between the Cayman and the Yaris when you consider the extra practicality and all-weather capability of the Yaris. But the Cayman would shade it. The M3, lovely though it is, would be the first to go!

We have similar choices in cars.

I had a GR Yaris from new in 21 alongside a 997.2 GT3 and 987.2 Boxster Spyder.

I did like my GRY and had it for 2 years and about 20,000 miles but found the ride, noise and frequent servicing took the shine off it, only because the balance of fun driving compared to mundane everyday duties with few opportunities to enjoy it's abilities was the wrong way around for me

It was a fab car to drive fast and very predictable in the wet.

I think where you are the balance of fun to mundane is far greater in your favour so I would say go for it.

Perfect on these types of roads.

Completely understand. But I’d at least try and get a shot in one before you completely rule it out. The new ones do look fantastic in the flesh too. Seating position is perfect. Gear change. Drivetrain. And much more practical if needed. Plus it doesn’t need any mods… wink

What dampers you go for?

I have owned a GRY from new in Feb 2021 (20k miles) and it’s shared a garage with a GT3 and 964 RS amongst others and never comes up short. Totally standard car (besides some geo tweaks) and still gives me enough enjoyment to maintain its place in the fleet. Even managed to survive an RMA day at Spa.

Not a GRY, but we have a Clubsport S Golf for the same sort of cheaper thrills.

Probably get shot down here but have you considered a new model S3 . I was in a similar dilemma what to buy and settled on an S3 .It sits on my drive between a 911 and a Polo gti. It’s the ideal daily , the 911 a fast fair weather car , Polo great for city work and Audi for all else. It’s fast enough ,seats 4 , 4wd with good tech , combining full leather interior comfort and quietness for most journeys . It gets poor reviews from some but after a couple of thousand miles driving I’m baffled why as it’s a great all rounder. Anyway good luck with the choice you make.

Oh I'm jealous of that garage above.

My garage is on a block, very damp and dark with no power.

But I'm still glad that I have a garage for storage and parking my Triumph Bonnie. My Alpine has to sit outside.

Sorry off topic but I swoon every time I see a garage that you can actually hang pictures in and keep cars on trickle charge.

I'd buy a double garage with just a loft above for me if I could find one biggrin

When I sold my last Macan I still needed something practical (dog wagon) and looked at the Yaris among others but it was a bit too small.

In the end I managed to get one of the last new MINI Clubman JCW's. 300+BHP, 4 wheel drive and 5 (6?) doors, it's probably not as sharp as the Yaris but is still bonkers to drive and a lot of fun.

Yup, my Missus has one too, utter hooligan of a car that really flies under the radar.

My daily is a black 2016 Transit Connect LWB (awesome van) but it's not needed nearly as much anymore, so am seriously considering that new CTR to join the GT3s...

I’ve run a GRY alongside my 981 Spyder for the last 3 years - perfect combination for my use and it will stay when the incoming SRS arrives.
I put cross climate tyres on in the winter months and it will handle any conditions securely. The GRY replaced a Mini JCW - for me it seems a much more competent car but the Mini had charm too.
