Just been watching the "Wheeler Dealer" (I know, I know) episode with the 996.
Please bear with me, (no pun intended) as I'm a little bit shy on these engines so need enlightening please.

On the programme a replacement bearing is fitted with what seems to be an external oil feed to it. Is that the usual method of remedying the potential problem? Can this feed be seen from underneath without pulling the gearbox out?
Reason I ask is I keep getting asked if my 986 has had the bearing replaced and I've no idea. Had a feeling it might have been as the 'box was out years before I bought it for a clutch problem but no paperwork to confirm.
My car is a 3.2S from 2004. Out of curiosity is the 3.6 engine in the 996 similarly at risk and what percentage of these engines are thought to be at risk?

Thanks for guiding me.

The replacement bearing kit with the oil feed is only one of the many kits. I think it's possibly the only one with an oil feed.

There's another option. Just drive it and forget about the IMS smile

I ran a 986s for 6 years, 11 years old to 17 years old. On the original IMS as far as I could see from the invoices. A few things needed fixing but the IMS was not one of them.

Edit: sorry your concern is about the 996 isn't it

Thanks Slippydiff:

Jamie:
Re just driving the car and stop worrying, that's what I've been doing.

Have thought of a 996 to replace the 986 (see other question earlier this week) but it would seem there's little point. Devil I know etc.

Cheers all
