Production got underway in September 1987. Manufactured between September 1987 and September 1989 only 340 cars were built. All but one of these 53 (UK cars) were finished in Grand Prix White with a red ‘Carrera CS’ decal on each side of the car, along with the red Fuchs wheels. 28 were US-bound cars that featured the standard American-spec, 217bhp engine.

Certainly some impressive sales at that auction, good to see some of the air cooled and older "special" Porsche selling at such prices, even if some seemed a little high against comparative offerings available elsewhere?

I've only been following the 3.2CS / 944 Cup and 964 3.8RSR ... but values certainly seem to be on the up.
For some reason, of the 50+ cars, two "delivery mileage" 964 3.8RSR have sold in recent months at over $2m .... I'm not sure if these represent the value of competition cars ... I'm guessing there are so few that each car will have a value on the day depending upon its unique history ...
Whether the above cars will ever be seen outside of a static display in a private or public museum remains to be seen !

Chris, the 2 x White pearl leather clad 964 RSR have been knocking around for about 5-8 years since being discovered in the east, covered in dust!, They have been up for sale quite a few times...... that's what confused me a little about the sale yesterday, some of the cars making big money over and above expectations.
As and when I sell my car, I may insist the prospective purchaser drinks 2 bottles of Champagne before we discuss the price?

But weren't they both very late orders outside the initial build specification for either RS or RSR cars ?
There is also the ROHR2 car that was built into a spare shell in white ... but with a series vin number ... strange times at Porsche !!

There was some "enthusiastic" bidding at that auction. Why pay $1 million for a 911R with 20 miles on it when there are others available in Europe with 200km for $350k to 400k? OK, it had a single mass flywheel and a custom interior (the colour of which you may or may not like) and a few other bits and bobs but really 2.5X the market price?
The prices for the rare cars like the 3.0RS and the 993 GT2 are high but they were good examples and they reflect their scarcity and classic status so I wouldn't argue. Conclusion: prices of the really rare, pristine stuff has plenty of room to rise from here.

US spec car…European cars are no good to US buyers/don’t want them. A 4.0 RS went for huge money at an auction a few months ago, think it was $700k to $800k from memory. You can convert European cars to US spec but it is expensive and it isn’t what the collectors want.If you want a 1of1 delivery mileage 911 R I guess that’s the money you need to pay….at least two people thought it was worth that It probably won’t ever be driven and might not see the light of day again. There are a lot of very big US collectors…only needs two to want a car for this kind of number I guess.
Chris, I know my old 3.2 CS which was a road car had the same underbody treatment as my previous 3.2 Carrera Sport. It was definitely a real CS, on the club register etc!
I have seen a UK CS racer that did not have any under arch protection, but have no idea if it came from the factory that way?
There were plenty of rumours about the spec of CS over the years..
One thing I could never quite work out and have only seen this in a CS.... The front seats have the comfort seat bases and sport backrests,,, as in a smaller bolster on the seat base than regular sports equipment seats in a 3.2.
Also seat colours and trim pattern including piping seemed to offer quite a few options for a car that you could almost exclusively only buy in white.
I had it, but not all had the rear luggage deck, flat, carpeted storage compartment where the seats would go in a regular 3.2. I have definitely seen CS without the stroage, maybe that was removed at some point to save weight?

Looking at the German car advertised ... this does not have the rear shelf. The underside has been dry ice cleaned but the ducting in the exhaust area is not as Porsche built it ... one has to wonder why ?
Mine does have the rear shelf and I had alway thought it a defining feature rather like the 986CS ... as for weight stripping, if going that route it would surely have been a lot more than just the rear parcel shelf ?
I have the Porsche summary of modifications ... far fewer than for the later 964RS but I guess that was a far more determined effort leading as it did into the one make series' of the 964 Cup etc etc. I guess it's also to be expected on short production runs that there may be some substitutions in the parts bin ... ?
