Old school, with a 944 or 968?
Can you get a decent 928 for that price these days??
Neither will have the same dynamics as those excellent suggestions above, but they have their own merits...
I came out of an '86 944 Turbo after a decade of ownership and from my experience and many 944 owners, they are a money pit. Can you get a decent 928 for that price these days??

A well specced MY2006 987.1 3.2 Boxster S is probably the best option at this price all things factored in. Performance only a little off the 3.4, but far less worry re bore scoring, which is a very real problem on the M97 3.4. Stellar value right now.
Exception would be a 987.1 3.4 Cayman S (or Boxster S) if you can find one that's already had a quality rebuild. Untouched M97 3.4 is just too prone to scoring for my money.
987 2.7 lacks a little pace, for me.
A really clean 986 a good option, too. 996s are obvs very nice too but look poor value in this context. You'll pay more for an utterly shagged 996 than a really good 986 3.2, which makes little sense. A really, really good 996 is probably a stretch at this price point currently and probably rivals a 987.2 re market value, which again looks like questionable value..
Personally think the 986 550 is ultimately over priced bling. Opinions will rightly vary re the aesthetic, details of which I think look gaudy and cheap (the badge on the centre console looks like it came out of a cereal packet / cheap Christmas cracker). But in objective terms, it has pretty much nothing of consequence from a driving perspective to set it apart from a regular 3.2. Bit of a wannabe collector trinket.

I do often wonder how cool it would have been if the product timings had meant the first say 6 months of Cayman S's had shipped with that 3.2 engine.

I did smile at the comment that a £15k 996 was poor value & hinting that the price would drop
Who hinted that the price would drop? Certainly not my post and indeed I don’t think it will. I said the 996 offers poor value in this context, which I think it does. Not that anyone needs agree. But pointing out that very good 986s are available at a substantial discount to shagged 996s makes a perfectly rational case for poor 996 value. The context here isn’t ‘what 911 should I buy’, in which case 986 and 987 pricing would be basically irrelevant. OP hasn’t expressed a particular pref for a 911, just wants a Porsche, in which case the 911 options are poor value at this price point. You have fewer options and generally condition will be worse.
i am here and thank you all for the replies
the reason for change is i can now wfh 3-4 days a week and my current car is costing almost £700 a month (with petrol insurance and cost of car )
id rather pay 2/3 of that if possible and have something a bit more special
the 981 jump a bit too much sadly.
almost every porsche in my budget is silver !!!
