They make lots of options, but I always use a fixed battery lead as do Porsche. never fancy the lighter socket route myself.

Cheers, wasn't sure whether the lighter socket turns off after so long.

I use my CTEK via the 12v socket in the passenger footwell and it works perfectly. You can close the door without damaging the cable.

Ignore any comments about cheap sockets and bell wire. The 12v accessory sockets are rated at 20amps and are therefore wired and fused appropriately. The maximum output of a MXS 5.0 is 5 amps.

Why not put the lead you get free with it on the battery, all OPC do it correctly, I don’t get the need to do it via a 12v socket anyway.
Also the lead has lights, so you know when it needs charging.

Because opening the passenger door, plugging in the charger, fully closing the door and then locking the car is by far the quickest and most convenient way to do it.

The ‘comfort lead’ you get when you buy a normal MXS 5.0 or 7.0 does not have lights to show when it needs charging. That is an optional accessory.

I personally DID connect the supplied ‘comfort connect’ lead to my battery and earthing post when I got the charger. But I never use it, as it’s not the most convenient method, and certainly on my car you cannot fully close the bonnet with the charger connected without nipping the cable.

Another vote for MXS 5.0. Have plugged into footwell socket for years with no issues (various Caysters)

Handbook says you should connect to the terminals under the bonnet....requires removing the plastic covering which takes about a minute. Given that’s what the people that designed and built the car recommend that’s what I do smile

My sockets go dead after a few minutes,

Of you connect to the battery which I always do connect the earth to the chassis not the - post on battery on 991 gen and newer. It’s something to do with the car’s way of monitoring battery management. It’s been covered in here before.

MX 3.8 is absolutely sufficient and cheaper than the 5.0. In fact I cannot really see any difference, other than price.

So hardwired the Ctek to the battery terminals as the length won't allow you to use the neg charging post. Looks like working perfectly, on number 7

Bit of a thread resurrection but can anyone advise which setting I should be using on the MXS 5.0 for a 991.2 GT3?

There is the normal car battery program or an AGM option…

Thanks in advance!

Page 4 of the instruction manual says Normal Battery Program "suitable for WET batteries, Ca/Ca, MF, GEL batteries and many AGM batteries"

Whereas the AGM section mentions it's for 'most AGM batteries like Optima & Odyssey'.

Like you, I wondered which option to use on my 981 CGTS which is AGM. I got different answers depending who I asked, including a reputable Indy.

Even contacted cTEK customer support, but they advised to contact the OEM.

Page 5 explains the differences between the charge types.

So which did you end up using?

Use the normal one myself, on account of 1) it's better to put slightly less voltage through a battery than too much, 2) Optima or Odyssey batteries seemed more suited to caravans, 4x4 & the marine market
