I'm having the porker serviced soon, an independent specialist uses 'Castrol Softec TXT Fully Synthetic 5w/40'. Can any of you fellas tell me whether i should stick to Mobil 1, as this is what my 993 has always had. Or am i being a liitle too fussy/paranoid?

Hi - I've used other oils in the past (when i had my 993), including Magnatec, Castrol RS formula - tended
to change around.

I think a lot of porsche techs. now advise not to put a really thin oil like Mobil 1 into the (earlier) 993s now anyway. I think you'll find many OPCs won't put mobil 1 in if you get it serviced from them.

I changed oil every 5k or so miles - did a few trackdays. Engine stayed very sweet right up to the time I sold it.

There are 2 kinds of Mobil 1 though. The thin stuff called Mobil 1 0-40 and the heavier "Motorsport" Mobil 1 15-50. I would have thought that the latter would be fine.

I don't know about your 5-40 oil though.

My engineer uses Castrol RS 10-60 in my 993 RS.

It was definetly 0-40 or 5-40, I'll have to take a look again at the label they left in the engine compartment.

Here in France the Mobil 1 that I buy for my porker is 5W-40. This doesn't seem to be available in the UK where they push the 0W-40 instead. It's also 2/3rds the price over here compared to the UK, but that's another issue...

Actually I believe there are six or so different formulations for Mobil 1. The same applies to many engine oils, as a product which is suitable for use in, say, Alaska, needs to have different properties from one intended for use in South Africa.

The Mobil reps at the R11 PCGB do in Lancasters Colchester recommended 0w40 for the 964 and up, and if it leaked more than you were happy with to move up to the 15w50.

I too had TXT softec 5w40 put into my car at the OPC Cardiff....as they too siad about the Mobil 1 being a bit too thin. They use it now on the 964 and the 993.
