Hi All

I currently have a Cayman 987.2 S. The other half fancies another couple of seats and a bigger boot. I've driven the current gen diesel Panamera and liked it very much, apart from being diesel.

I'm looking at a first gen 4S or Turbo. The turbo seems astonishing value at the moment, some low mileage (20-40k) versions kicking around for circa £40k. I actually started looking at the 4S but there actually seems to be more turbos available. Is the turbo likely to hold on to its value more than the 4S? Seems a no brainer if a turbo is coming out at the same, approximate, cost?

As far as I can tell from my initial research there seems to be few horror stories, more than happy to be corrected though.

I'd welcome opinions on anyone who has owned a Panamera.

Thanks.

James.

I don't own one, but I keep my covetous eyes on them now and then.

The number of forum posts of problems is startling low, suggesting great quality and reliability (although they're not that old).

They are big old barges, which is a problem if you have narrow roads to negotiate.

The 4S I test-drove was pretty damned rapid; the Turbo must be bonkers. 911 Turbos tend to feel heavy to me (I'm a C2 guy now), but would have thought this less of an issue on the bigger car.

Henry Catchpole recently raved about the Turbo (Gen II, but still): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZmDXR2i7HM

Great cars ... I have had mine 2 years and love it..... not had a single issue or expense other than routine services.

Rock solid built like granite ..... real road presence and drives and handles a lot sharper than you'd imagine.

It gets used more often than any of my other cars and my Wife loves it so bonus. Won't be getting rid of it anytime soon..... get one you won't be disappointed 👍🏾

I asked the same question a while back & the response seemed to be "if you can live with the looks, they are great.".

Consensus was GTS was the best of the bunch as it seemed more agile, with a lighter feel to it.

Don't own one but had the hybrid one for a week in Germany a couple of years ago. I think they're magnificent pieces of kit - little better for effortlessly covering distance, wonderful cabin, and lots of fun to be had hurling something about the same size as Kent about when you fancy pressing on a bit. Hybrid element really works with that car too; quite aside from saving a few quid at your local Shell station the quietness and ease suits the practical nature of the car.
Obviously you'd have to be insane to spend anything other than budget money on any large capacity diesel these days, given where diesel prices are headed.
Personally, I like the look of the early cars, although I think I may be the only person on Earth of whom that's true, and as you say they're getting to be great value.

I've had a fully specced up LHD 2010 Panamera S (PDK gearbox) for a year now. I use it to drive between London and Northern Italy.

It is by a distance the best car I have ever owned/driven. Remarkably lithe for such a big beast. Super comfortable. Excellent ergonomics. Not that thirsty for a V8, either. Fearsome acceleration and pulls like a train at least to 160mph (I must confess to not exceeding that, even in Germany).

Rather than being sensible, I often divert en route via Germany for a bit of autobahn action. But that is the kind of car it is; you pop out to the next village for a pint of milk and find yourself in Lichtenstein a few hours latersmile.

No real issue during my ownership except for a fritzed gearbox radiator.

It is, however, a car for the open: it is wide and a bit of a pig to load up onto the Eurotunnel. Not massively well suited to threading through mediaeval Italian town streets.

Thanks for the responses guys. I managed to go and have a look at one yesterday with my partner. It is even bigger than I expected, although cars always look bigger in showrooms. I'll keep looking and considering them though, sounds like everyone loves them once they own them, which is encouraging.

Hi finestjammy,

What's the model and spec?

The Launch Control/Sports Chrono add-on is a hoot and takes 0.2 seconds off the already impressive 0-60 timesmile.
