Vehicle history checks ?

What are the current on line tools that allow us to research a used cars history ?
Its been a while since I last bought a car and apart from maybe calling up a garage to check the servcie book is genuine plus an HPI check thats as far as I go.
However when I read some posts here you guys seem to know everything about the cars being disscussed.

Search the forums (Pistonheads, 911UK and even PCGB) for the registration number or model you're looking at as you can sometimes find the previous user posting about it.

I'm buying a 996 C2 and have found the previous owner's posts on 911UK and everything he has posted lines up exactly with the history as given to me by 911Virgin (refurbished wheels, Danske sport mufflers replacing originals, front and rear bumpers resprayed etc) so I'm even happier about my purchase
