Quick question for Grant or anyone in the know

Just for clarity - if you are referring to Grant of Hartech - he is not an accountant. He is trained in financial management but also has been trained as a technician and spent many years working on all aspects of Porsche cars - although admittedly some years ago. He is more knowledgeable than most about all aspects of the cars and the engines hence why his advice is so appreciated by the majority.
The 996 crankcases have two constituents - a cast in core of 6 tubes of Lokasil (which is a composite of silicon and a binder creating a porous tube that when the molten aluminium is forced into the metal moulds burns off the binding agent and filters through the Lokasil tube to create a silicon rich surface only where the tubes were located I.e. the cylinders) and a commercial aluminium similar to LM25 (everywhere else making it easier to machine but unsuitable as a piston/ring wear surface).
Alusil is a high silicon alloy (in excess of 13% silicon) and it is the excess silicon that comes out of solution when hot to form evenly distributed well bonded small concentrations of silicon to provide the harder areas to resist piston ring and thrust face wear with a softer aluminium area that can be exposed back to form a microscopically cratered surface of silicon particles.
The only way to properly asses the actual 996 alloy would be to send a sample for analysis.

Thanks for that - you know if I spent all the time that I presently spend on Internet answers and creating video and guides to explain about the issues with these engines - on production work instead - I could probably permanently retire! Oh but then I really would get bored!
It's been a really pleasant change this last 2 weeks designing the next Cylinder replacements for a new model and machining the prototype cylinders while our machine shop have been machining the cases - real engineering and the bit I enjoy the most still!
