Early signs of pending IMS / RMS failure??

My mates gen 1 997 manual with 44k miles on the clock.. should he start saving up?

Looks like an oil leak.

Thats an oil leak, RMS - rear main seal. Don't confuse the two as so often happens.

Simple seal replacement, part is not expensive.

It's just getting to it is gearbox off - so usually done at same time as clutch.

So about 4-6 hours labour should cover it?

I've no experience of that job on a 911 but I suspect so, possible less. Im sure it would be a very 'routine' job for anyone familiar with the car.

Of course, depending on what life is left in the clutch... (project creep!)

I had a new clutch and RMS done on mine while I waited. The gearbox was off laying on the floor in about an hour. Id think 4 hours should be plenty. It's worth budgeting for a new clutch maybe while it's off.

If the clutch is fine, and doesn't need changing, and the drip not too bad, leave it until either really do need doing.

Sorry if I'm misreading this thread but can someone confirm if the above is an RMS leak, or if it is A.N Other oil leak? Thanks.
