996 Unlocking Doors With The Key

Help!!!
My 1998 996 alarm has gone into sleep mode, so not unlocking with the fob.

Normally I'd open the drivers door with the key, and put the key in the ignition with 10 seconds to stop the alarm going off.

But ... the drivers door handle currently has a fault, the window drops but the latch mechanism isn't operable. So I've been opening the passenger door then opening the drivers door from the inside.

So the exam question, when you unlock with the key, does it unlock both doors or just the drivers door?
I don't want to use he key to unlock, then find I can't open either doors.

Or another thread says you can turn the key from lock to lock (turning off sleep mode) then press the fob whilst the key is still in the lock.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 986 Boxster S.

The key only unlocks the driver's door. So you'll end up triggering the alarm.

With regards to 'waking up' the alarm system, I believe you have to get to the ignition and turn it on to do this.

If you unlock ,then lock with key it should reset and then use the fob to unlock again.

I don't know about 996, but on a 987 you can wake the alarm system by pulling the driver's door handle and then unlock the car in the normal way with the button.

Doesn't work on the 996 sadly..

The fob button won't work until you turn the ignition on - my '98 car behaves the same way, you get 10s from unlocking the car to be able to 'disarm' the alarm by turning the ignition on or starting the engine.

You might have to sacrifice the door handle/surround to get in to push the plunger that unlatches the door on the lock unit..

Hi depending on the year,trying turning key to unlock position and holding it there,it may lower windows for you.

I don't suppose anyone has an early model currently in sleep mode they could test, as the (much appreciated) advice seems model year dependant.
Currently if I try the 'turning the key one way, then the other and press the fob' if it doesn't work the alarm will sound, presumably until the battery goes flat, happy Sunday neighbours!
