I have just come from Waitrose, fitted just fine. Interestingly the passenger cabin does not look to have changed much in size if you look at the roofline. Its just wider hips to accommodate the tyres. Given the power difference c100/c400bhp this is hardly surprising.

Another tiny fact not being mentioned a lot, car brands can't make any decent money by producing small cars. There was a great documentary about this and interview with Professor Gordon Murray's T25 prototype was mentioned.

My old 997 against an early 911, the current 2016 991.2 is no wider at the rear in C2S form than the 2005 997.1 C2S at 1808mm

Smaller cars do not make any decent profit. Established car manufacturers margin on large cars at least 4 times bigger than small cars. Considering the time/resources they have spent on each - basically the same - (assembly,production, regulations and etc..) the choice is so clear for them.

And unfortunately no, the amount of material needed or the number of small/compact cars being sold still not much higher than their bigger versions-models.
