A Porsche collecting friend of mine recently picked up a 'viper green' RS for £10k - and is completely smitten with it.

I drove a focus RS around Silverstone last weekend. That thing really hangs on. Very very benign on the limit, good amount of grunt.

Brakes were the notable weak point as you d expect, but over all, a good fun package.

Glenn: Haven't tracked either yet but may take the Focus to Donington on the Wednesday between Christmas and New Year. We all get spoiled with Porsche brakes. They are so good on track that we tend to forget that most road cars aren't up to much track work.

James: Looking at your garage we have spookily similar choices (except I don't have my F10 M5 anymore).

That's a Renaultsport RS 200. I keep one in France - brilliant little cars.

How does the Golf R or Fiesta ST Brookspeed (?) compare ?

I have a Polo Bluemotion GT and had thought of a GTI --- but in this greasy weather the Bluemotion GT struggles for traction ---

After seeing this pic, I just made an offer on a silver one a birthday present to myself .... spontaneous purchases always the best
