i just bought a good named 75-90 gearbox oil for my 993. draining it was easy, filling it up a bit awkward as i had a rubbish pump i bought but otherwise a doddle. if it doesnt ask for anything mega special just buy a decent name oil. i wouldnt buy redline shockproof etc for a road car.

Thanks for that, was the oil semi or fully synthetic or was it just a natural non-synth ? That is my main query . Cheers 
Just some regular 75 90 gearbox oil from euro car parts. Think I spent 20 to 30 quid or so.
Couple of new washers for the drain and fill plugs worth getting in ready. It wouldn't have been full synthetic I don't think at that price. I paid 75 quid for redline in my kit car G50 box which was probably overkill.
It might have been a placebo effect but it did feel smoother after removing the filthy old oil.

Looking at eurocarparts, that was probably fully synthetic (£9/ ltr). The ordinary stuff's only about a fiver/ litre. I'll get down there tomorrow, got a local one in Stoke. Gearbox oil now replaced. Just a couple of queries, the colour of the old oil seems very silvery or dark grey and not as expected dark brown/black, obviously indicating some wear within. Also I measured 3 litres that came out not 2.7 litres or 2.8 litres as required. Don't know if it's ever been changed before (70k miles '99 C4),maybe someone put 3 litres in instead of 3 U.S.quarts. Box works perfectly smooth in operation previous to change.

Don't worry about it it's probably original oil and you always get silvery trace in gear oil to a certain extent. As long as no big chunks of metal ! :-)

No bits in there just a very silvery fluid of which I measured after to be 3 litres which is obviously too much, so I thought someone has topped it up when not required (maybe when not completely level which would give a false level).It is 17 years old so this could have happened at some stage of ownerships. Haven't had chance to take it for a spin since changing oil yesterday but will try it out sometime today, I'll let you know if there's any difference- should think so with that lovely new oiling there to lube everything !!
