Live traffic updates coming to PCM 3.1
Discussion
Sounds pretty good, details here: http://www.total911.com/real-time-traffic-updates-...
"While the current PCM traffic updates are processed using data from TMC and TMCpro, the new technology uses a much larger database comprised, in part, of GPS data from numerous mobile phones. Collected and analysed by INRIX (a specialist technology firm), this data is relayed to the PCM 3.1 almost continuously, with near constant refreshes providing almost instant updates to the traffic situation on routes programmed into your navigation."
Has anyone else been told online services are now free in the UK? It's still £122 on the configurator. Where do you stand if you've just submitted a spec?

My Tiguan Discover Nav has live traffic info from Google via my wifi connected mobile. It puts the coloured traffic overlays on the map, live fuel prices, etc, but it doesn't seem to me like it uses the better (better than TMC) info to aid route planning so it's not worth Jack.
It also has Apple Car Play but VW don't seem to be able to let me buy the required activation code yet. Whenever I phone they are beyond clueless and I give up. Car Play would let me use Apple Maps on the Nav screen.

Except there's no way to get it on the main screen in the car.997 044 908 70 comes on 1 disc and upgrades the PCM firmware to v4.76. Supposedly (I can't tell any difference yet) it updates the on-board nav mapping data to 08.2015 as well. Installation takes circa 30 mins - insert disc, press confirm, and don't turn off engine and disable stop/start unless using an external power supply. No PIWIS coding or any code input is required to update firmware and nav database. The system will reboot a few times, spit a few errors (no speed limit info), then it should be ok. A full reboot, lock, unlock etc is then needed to complete the system activation.
However, online traffic info does not show up.
The disc comes with a 25 digit code, which I suspect needs to be added via PIWIS II to implement the live traffic functionality.

Nice that they give the possibility to retrofit new technology. Which is very unlike Porsche. But the reality even that real time traffic information is not what it could be. I have in the BMW and yes it's vastly better than TMC but still not a patch on Waze.
The future is apple car play with Waze to be displayed on the car screen me thinks... Apple have just handed a free cheque to car manufacturers allowing them to continue selling overpriced LCD screens but at least they will carry useful information now :-)

It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) that even with Apple CarPlay you won't be able to display 3rd party Nav Apps like Waze on the big screen. You are tied to Apple Maps with CarPlay only.
