I can't put my finger on it, but the rear bumper looks odd - where the exhaust exits.

Yes, looks completely standard to me.

The bottom lip of the bumper has also been sprayed body colour (normally black plastic) hence the slightly different look.

It seems to be a very popular mod (or maybe available from the factory ?)

I prefer the "unpainted" look (this is a Gen 1 car) as it makes the rear of the car appear higher (and thus appears to have more rake) rather than the slammed/"dragging on the ground" look of the painted version.
