Ok, I know this is lower end for many on here, but I want some thoughts on what way to go here.

Budget is 25k, for that I want a Cayenne and a 996 C2.

Browsing the classifieds looks like it is do-able. I need to px my A6 though, so that means trade for at least one of them.

For the 996, I'm pretty decided on a manual C2. It's going to get used as intended and will be my daily. The Cayenne, I'm not sure on the v6 or v8, fuel doesn't matter and it will get used as the family wagon.

Any thoughts or tips? The Cayenne that 911V had last week has helped me get the green light from SWMBO!

Was thinking the same, except both would be toys and already have the 996.2 and the Cayenne would replace an old Discovery and a V70. Should be doable.

That is my plan, got the cayenne already, with the 996 following soon.
I will be going 996 tip again, had one before and it worked for me, also means SWMBO can jump between them as they are very similar

I'm in a similar situation although my £25k is in a Cayenne Turbo and a 911SC. The Cayenne is the daily and the SC is the toy. The 996 C4S I had a few years back just wasn't special enough as a toy and too much of a risk engine-wise as a daily.

I have the V6 and it is ok for what it is, it is a family bus. BUT note I think I am the only PHer that thinks this everyone else hates it and will tell you to go V8 or Turbo

You may have summed up why in your own post though. When I bought my 4.5S, I bought as old / cheap as possible because I assumed it would be a bus and I fully expected to find I didn't like it and hardly ever used it. But it completely surprised me - it is FUN when you want it to be, and I love it. My only regret is not buying a newer one.

your statment is true, but why then run a 996 along side the Cayenne is you have all the fun you need in the Cayenne. It would be a strange world if the £25K got you a Cayenne Turbo & a 3.4 996 and you thought you were getting the sort straw by having to take the 911.

A V6 cayeene will do 95% of the things the V8 will do barr taking away that special feel of having a 911 to use as well

I have never driven a Cayenne, so am speaking from near-total ignorance (forgive me); but I would be pretty amazed if any Cayenne were to be so much fun as to make a 911 superfluous!

Even a very fast and capable SUV is still massively heavy and high. A very different experience from a sports car...no matter how good.

Surely nobody on here would mistake a capable bus for a sports car eek

I seem to be missing the point where it was stated that buying a V8 Cayenne instead of the V6 meant that you couldn't also have a 996 for £25K?

The V8 Cayenne is fun when you want it to be - and if you haven't driven one then I suspect it's more fun than you'd expect. Of course it's not a sports car and never will be - but on a twisty road you can chuck the suspension in sports mode, lower the air suspension, switch to manual gears - and enjoy yourself.

Would a 996 perform better on a twisty road? Of course it would, and if I'm purely going out for a fun drive I'd obviously take my 996 turbo in preference to the Cayenne. But the extra power of the V8 means it is not just a boring practical bus - in my opinion - and the OP can certainly afford one if you have £25k for a 996 and a Cayenne.

Changing the direction of the thread a bit, but on A/B road what would be fasted a 3.4 996 or a Cayenne Turbo.

996 easily I would think.

I'd personally spend a bit more on the 'fun car' and get a nice 5 door MK5 Golf GTI or Audi A3 Sportback + the 911. You could get a 997 C2 and a Golf GTI?

Cayenne's are not cheap to run and not just in fuel.

I'm going to be in the same position as you (hopefully) next year, where I will need a proper family car.

It's likely going to be:

Q5 and 997 S Coupe
Panamera and Golf GTI/Audi
RS4/RS6 and ?
Macan and ?
C/E 63 AMG and Golf GTI

Might have to be 911 free for a couple of years.

Some good input here which I appreciate!

My current hesitation is the engine reliability of the 3.6 in the 996. Need to speak to a few specialists and see if it really is as random as it sounds. I'm ok money wise, but don't want to buy a 6k+ time bomb!

Cayenne wise, if I could get SWMBO to settle for a mkv golf gti then that would be great. She wants a cayenne though! (So do I if we're being honest!)

I fear you combo's will all blow the £25K budget.
I am in a different place in my life just now where the family car comes before the toy, so I would go £15K on cayenne & £10k on a nice 3.4 996 with Amber's

Snap. 2 kids and the paraphernalia means the family car has to be large and fit everything we need.

Is the 3.4 less prone to problems than the 3.6?

For me, if it haven't went bang by now, then the odds are it won't. Also as I want a tip 996 there will be no over revs. The plain lines of the 3.4 are ageing well

Oh yes, but only the Golf and 997 at the top are my thoughts for 25k

The below are just my thoughts for next year and probably vary from 25 to 45k :-)

The logic certainly makes sense to me. Go higher on the mileage and if it was going to have let go then it would have by now.

I was always very anti non-s bodied 996 models, but some of them still look very, very right.

My combo is probably £27k: 17k 996 C4S and £10k Discovery 3 HSE. I would always spend the lion's share of the money on the car you want and the remainder on the car you need. If I was only going to have 1 car, then the Cayenne would come into the frame; right now I can't see what it does that a Discovery doesn't do (as a family car and living in a rural area).
