More and more info is available on-line now in relation to our cars if you have the correct reference numbers from the ownership docs. When selling buyers are often asking for document reference numbers and issue dates to check on MOT test history and HPI etc, is there anything malicious that could happen by providing these reference numbers or copies of V5s/MOTS etc?

If a buyer does a HPI check on your car, before they can get the HPI guarantee they will be asked for the V5 doc number and VIN of the car. Along with all the usual checks, HPI will check that the details provided are the same as those held by DVLA.
To answer your question re malicious activity, in theory anything is possible so it's down to your discretion - selling cars privately does carry some risks. A buyer is just as suspicious of the car you're selling so has to do these checks... Declining to provide these details could potentially deter a genuine buyer.

I wouldnt entertain buying a car where the owner appeared to be cagey about or reluctant to supply certificate details.
I saw a car for sale recently where the tool had obscured the registered number and he wouldnt divulge it to a prospective buyer who wanted to HPI it before travelling a substantial distance - what a tool. Worse, of course, but a similar issue from a buyers perspective.
