Would you p/x a 2005 BMW 530d sport for a 1998 996 carrera 2

Hi All,
As per the title really ?
Would I be completely mad p/xing a 2005 BMW 530d sport for a 15 year old 996 ?
My BM is the family car but my wife has her own car too.
The BM is used for the school run twice a week.
We have 1 little'un who is 7.

Both cars have done about 140k, just had my BMW remapped so getting 40+mpg.
The fuel bill is not really the issue, I am more worried about the 996 needing a rebuild ???
It has had 2 owners and full service history. The last owner has had it for 9 years.

Now, although my BM has recently been remapped (very quick now etc. ) it still is not a 911, and I hanker after one

Also I am viewing it tomorrow and just wondered if there is anything in particular that I should be looking for ???

As long as the 996 has a warranty (or you buy a warranty) and you have a decent contingency budget for wear and tear / maintenance items (clutch, brake discs, pads, tyres, aircon radiators, servicing etc) then go for it!

this sounds like my TVR 390 SE which needs a lot of fettling etc. !
Are they unreliable then ???

Also it is a Tiptronic S, any comments on this V a Manual ???

Not especially, but most of them are now over 10 years old, so even with scrupulous maintenance (and as with any car), things break / wear out. The advantage of buying a 996 is that they're now relatively cheap to buy, but the genuine parts are still expensive. There have been a few well publicised issues with engine reliability, but at this time in their lives, most cars will have either been or sorted or not suffered the bore / IMS issues at all. See here for details on the engine issues ...

If you want / need an auto - then the Tiptronic unti isn't a bad box to use - but the manual is so much more engaging (and faster) .... The good ones have a lovely, precise and weighty shift.

Also there is a lot of history with the car apparantly, so if it has had an engine replacement/rebuild then I suppose that would be good news ???

Been getting quotes for a second key (my wife will need it) and I'm looking at nearly £300 !!!!

PPI is a pre purchase inspection.

Ok, I'll spill the beans too, the car has been offered to me for £6400 !!!!!
I was the second highest bidder from a reputable company on flea bay.
I don't have to p/x my BM thinking about it either but I would need to swop my insurance.

Millions of threads on tiptronic vs manual if you do a search. If in town you will prefer tiptronic.

They are reliable if you get the right one and look after it.

At the end of the day you're looking at a 911 for a few k.

Aside from needing to re-conolise the leather (interesting that the passenger seat looks as worn as the drivers side) - that looks fairly tidy for the money - but we all know what can lurk beneath ....

Good luck and get a Warrantywise (or similar) warranty on it straight away!

Forgetting preferences. Tiptronics are reliable and no clutch or over rev to think about.
