dab radio in 996
Discussion
Not in a 996 but I think the only simple option you have is a Pure Highway 300di/Alpine EZI DAB spliced into your FM aerial. Negatives are that you end up with a black box somewhere on the dash, another aerial on the windscreen and the DAB sound quality limited to that of FM. Probably going to cost around £250 fitted.
If I were you I would be looking at replacing the headunit and the standard aerial.

I would hold off on that and do some more research if I were you.
Just had a look on the DAB Motion website and it integrates with the car stereo via fm transmitter. If you've ever used an fm transmitter for an ipod you will understand the limitations regarding interference and sound quality.
Vs the Pure 300di/Alpine EZI DAB its the same rrp, but the Pure/Alpine is hard spliced into the aerial and has a good ipod interface as well.

I too would like to access DAB+ in my 986 c/w CDR-23.
Whilst the aesthetics of the OE look are generally appealing to me (I almost sprung for a Becker Grand Prix but resisted) adding something like the Pure/Alpine control already 'sacrifices' the full OE look for the benefits of new tech, so, in for a penny etc. and a replacement single DIN DAB+ head unit begins to sound like the more sensible alternative... (hopefully one that isn't to garish and can be tweaked to give out amber colours).
Are adapters required or is it plug and play with the possible (mandatory?) addtion of a DAB+ aerial?

Hi Trevor.
We've tried out the DAB motion and it seems to work well. Yes it has got a FM transmitter but it's nothing like the ipod ones. It's like comparing a Beetle to a 911 just because they've got rear engines and designed by the same person (or son) it doesn't mean they're the same! (most relevant analogy I could think of).
When the DAB motion senses it is going to be interfered with by a transmission on a similar or same frequency it will retune and the RDS on the stereo will follow it (AFC tech) This is in a similar way the RDS would retune a radio station. We haven't found a ipod FM transmitter we'd sell but the DAB motion is a different class. This is one of the reasons we want to publicise it.
Without getting to complicated, in general the problem with FM transmitters is that they are a fixed frequency and may be interfered with by the same or adjacent frequencies and often they're nowhere near the radio tuner or aerial.

Ok. Just bear in mind that even if interference isnt an issue, sound quality of the DAB stations will only be as good as an FM transmission.Hi Trevor.

I'm from Huets, just to add to the above from trevortpt.

Some of the ones we've seen would seem to be pretty low quality as well.
Admittedly the DAB motion is a new product but it has been extensively tested before going on the market. The ones we've tried out seem to work well but as with any DAB product the antenna type and location has a bearing on performance.

I have found a fairly low tech solution to in car DAB for my 997.1. I have had a Dension Gateway 500 iPod connection in the car for years. It does a fairly basic job but as it can be controlled in either direction (from the screen or the iPhone) I now connect the iPhone in the glovebox, open the BBC Radio app, start 6 Music and drive off. This has worked all the way from London to Bristol and hasn't caused me any issues with O2 and data limits.

Eerrr, without biging ourselves up too much this might suit:Whilst the aesthetics of the OE look are generally appealing to me (I almost sprung for a Becker Grand Prix but resisted) adding something like the Pure/Alpine control already 'sacrifices' the full OE look for the benefits of new tech, so, in for a penny etc. and a replacement single DIN DAB+ head unit begins to sound like the more sensible alternative... That Kenwood KDC-BT73DAB certainly looks like it would suit me but I guess that it won't be a simple plug and play based on this guide?

Would I need to make up my own adapters or can you find kits?
