Hi All

I've received an invite to attend a 'Drive the Range' day. I've seen feedback here from quite a way back and just wondered if anyone had done it recently and what their thoughts were. Appreciate it's sales focused but from what I saw previously, the picture was painted that the track was very busy and you had very limited time in each vehicle. I don't have expectations of a hardcore track day and the facility to do anything I like but I have done the track before when I’ve bought cars so there is no novelty factor.

Worth it or not? Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

Alex

Did it two years ago (so before the 991 and 981 cars came along) - would go along again in a hearbeat, but Silverstone is under 2 hours from me, so it's not much of a commitment. Wife really enjoyed it too.

I did it a couple of months ago with my better half.

The format is Panameras & Cayennes on the road (try to get 2up, rather than 3 as the overall time is the same).

Boxsters, 911s and Caymans on the slippy bits and track.

And a bit of a time-filling session on driving theory and fitness.

I enjoyed the day as I've never driven the bigger cars before (the Panamera GTS is brilliant), but you don't get a lot of track time.

If you apprach it on that basis, it's a good day out. There isn't any hard sell at all. No salesmen on site.

Same format as it was when I went - also got driven on the offroad course in a Cayenne. Got about 30mins in a 911 on the low-friction circuit and handling circuit, and about 30mins, maybe a bit more, split between Cayman and Boxster on the ice hill and kickplate. Was great fun for me to try and teach my other half how to correct a slide. I failed.

Seems it's only Boxster/911/Cayman on track from what I've read. You weren't strapped in on top of the luggage shelf on top of the engine in a Cayman were you? Assume you were in a 911 with one of their instructors in the front seat? My wife has never done anything like this so would be a bit more comfortable if I was about. I'd be quite happy to forfeit my time on the track to give her some more practice skidding and feeling what a car feels like when it goes.

Thanks for the replies all, much appreciated.

I had a great experience when I did my half days for the CR and 981 but then I bought a treat for my old man - we did a few hours driving in a couple of 991s. It was a bit tourist and I'm surprised I didn't get a certificate saying that I'd fulfilled my lifelong dream of driving a 911. Never doing that again so wanted to check that this wasn't going to be more of that.

The food is always good at Silverstone in my experience.

If it doesn't cost you to miss a days work, then it's a good day out.

I did it in April and quite enjoyed it - but make sure you get there early so you get time for brekky wink

I'm thinking of buying a new 981. A ticket for this might just swing itlaugh

You get a half day driving the same car as the one you've bought, when you buy a new Porsche.

The full day comes when your OPC thinks you may be ready to buy another......

Just seen this, so sorry for late reply - no, I was in the car with the wife - no instructor at all in the car, just a walkie-talkie, telling us when to 'go' and when to 'stop' - the actual teaching was kind of 'work it out yourself', or, in our case, me shouting 'LEFT LEFT LEFT, POWER' at the wife, until she told me she was going to leave me. She did eventually master it though...

ETA: This was Box/Cay on the ice hill and kick plate. On track it was 911, and the wife was in a separate car with a different instructor. The hot lap my instructor drove was incredible.
