So I think I am going to do this. I drove one again recently and loved the whole experience.

The problem is that my aircooled car will have to go as I only have enough garage space for two cars. One minute I am all 'yes lets do it' and the next I am against it.

l will be honest and say I cant do it as a outright cash purchase at the moment as we bought a house last year, Im sure you know the story, plastering, kitchen, floors, garden, decorating, there is always something that needs cash.

My plan is to put 30k in and finance 25ish.

Is this a silly idea? I can afford the payments but should I just wait another couple of years?

I have 2 concerns, 1 if I wait they may be 70+k in 2 years and I have missed a good opportunity and 2 I have put so much work into my current 911 that I might regret it and I seriously cannot go through another car build project at the moment.

GT3RS or stick and save?

Only you can decide but what I am sure of is that the 996 GT3RS is at its lowest value right now.

I would bet my house on it.

How are you planning on financing the £25k if you don't mind me asking?

An appreciating asset ... has to be a no brainer.

Although I have to disagree with mollytherocker ... they hit rock bottom at late £40k's (I know someone who sold their immaculate car for around £47k in 2010 ...) but I think everyone's sure that they won't depreciate further.

Yes they have been cheaper in the past of course, I meant going forward from now.

I'd be surprised if you can find a finance company to take the responsibility on one these days, hence my question. Most wash there hands on anything approaching ten years old.

Obviously there are many other ways to finance a car but I do think its part of the reason 996 gt3's sit for months/years unsold-people can't just walk in & get a cheap finance deal on them any more

It went for £46K. I offered £45K and missed out - and it still bugs me!

Chassis 1178 sold to another dealer who advertised it at £57k a month later! It sold quite quickly.

Is the RS so much better than the Mark 2 6GT3? Or is it only about rarity? And could the market have absorbed more?

hehe

Only story cars or silver mk2s sit around for years. Months maybe, especially over winter, but years?

Are you still talking them down Craig? wink
Just buy something. You bought that Mini and still hanker after a 911 or something special.
I agree with the first bit though, the days of loads of credit are gone, but I doubt that affects most people who buy these now.

Hi Lee, hard choice. I'd just wait and enjoy your car and if you see the RS start rising then buy one if it concerns you. They aren't going to rocket in two years.
It's up to you though. I know what I'm like once I get the itch for a change. smile

So, having had both, the real world reality for the average driver is that they are probably about 97% similar.
However, to steal a quote from another PHer on a similar thread a couple of years ago, at this end of the enthusiast market it's that last 3% that we crave and are happy to spend the premium on.

To me, it worth spending the extra for that 3% performance, the heritage, the little extra drama, and the little extra rarity (6GT3 is already fairly rare in the real world)

...however, having said all that, it also goes to show why the 6GT3 is such a bargain of a road/track/driver's car, especially when you compare to a 993RS, 964RS, older turbos, etc.

As for the OP's question, if you see one that is good enough for you, then I would go for it. If any car is safe enough to buy on leverage, then the 6RS should be in that group. The real challenge is that when it is the right time for you, the right car may take much longer to turn up.

(...as for values, I am an owner, but not selling so not trying to talk up values. However, I love it when people keep quoting the mr911 car as if that was 'market value'. No one knows if it was priced that way for a reason - story or just distressed sale - and also it got flipped and sold straight away for an additional £8k....so its market value was actually late £50k's and not late £40k's IMHO

I'll bite mate smile

Not trying to talk anything down at all (I don't think it's possible to do it) but there's certainly cars that have say around for years-how long us it since I inspected the PTS blue de islands car that MCP have had in stock? How long did nick whale (someone else has it now) have his? That's two off the top of my head that have been in the market for years.

I do think the credit thing is part of the reason though, most folk I know want to keep their cash liquid at the moment & financed cars allow you to do it. Folk who want to splash out big are few & far between & that's why there's so many cars that sit for such a long time.

Gotta agree about the mini though hehe as much as I love driving it it doesn't exactly have the wow factor!

There's quite a long list of stuff that's different; engine, suspension, roll cage, CF wing, CF boot lid, ... but ultimately the RS is a very similar driving experience to a GT3 with clubsport options. On a road, you'd probably not notice the difference if you tested an RS against a GT3 on the same tyres and suspension set-up.

The RS (and GT3 clubsport) is a track car for occasional road use. The GT3 'comfort' is a road car for occasional track use.

As for values, you can't argue with actual advertised prices from the PH classifieds:

Yep. I think we are saying the same thing.

I think you describe it better. A fair number of differences between the two, but for the average driver on the road, a similar experience. Especially between a 6GT3 CS and a 6RS.
In terms of 'comfort' I previously had a comfort with buckets and TEquipment rollcage and therefore also quite similar. Maybe a comfort with sports seats will feel quite different.
Setups also make a lot of difference. A 6GT3 with aggressive geo and motorsport diff may feel more focused than a 6RS with standard geo.
I would beg to differ on the 'one is primarily for the road and one is primarily for the track' opinion. Any 6GT3/CS/Comfort/6RS can be setup to be as compliant for the road or as focused for the track - especially if it has buckets and some form of cage to give the intensive experience. I might be off the mark if one has sports seats.

Thanks for the values table. Also backs up the view that late £40ks is not average market value. I have conducted 3x 6RS transactions in the last two years, one of which is in your table. All were late £50s or mid £60s (1 with mileage in the high 20s, and 2 with mileage in the teens). However, I think today, low mileage is heading northwards (imho). Anyway, lets leave the values debate as it can get emotive and your table gives all the necessary objective data.

The 6RS is a cracker of a car...
